We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt Chambers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matt, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My main goal in choosing a career since I was very young had been that I wanted it to be ‘something that helped people’. I went through quite a few different jobs and career paths before I came to the conclusion that being a tattoo artist is definitely a career that fits that description. I get to spend all day putting art on folks and it truly is the coolest job. I personally know that all of my tattoos have helped me grow to love my body tremendously and if I can help others that have struggled with that; it means the world to me. I love waking up in the morning knowing that I get to go to work and give someone a piece of art they can keep forever.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The types of tattoos that I love to do are bright, funky, and bold! I absolutely love doing color work and have been blessed with mentors who are phenomenal at it. I think that I have a bright and unique style that isn’t super common in tattooing! I wouldn’t say it has been an easy journey by any means; but an art degree, several jobs, and lots of friends along the way and we made it to a place I’m very thrilled to be in. There were definitely times when I was getting my BFA that it was really hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The good news is that with careers like this, you’re always entering new tunnels and challenges. It is extremely important to make sure that you have a strong support system through these times, it feels like a little headlamp when you can no longer see the end. I absolutely love what I do, and I cannot wait to spend my life putting art on folks.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite spots in the city to go to would definitely be Sakura (Japanese restaurant), Yatz (specifically the broad ripple location) to sit on the patio (very nice for people watching). For activities I enjoy doing I love going to comedy shows, so Helium or Crackers comedy club is always a wonderful time. For night life, my favorite places are definitely Metro or Ash and Elm Cider is a great place to go!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Oh absolutely, my tattoo mentors Annie Burkhard and Devan Smith have been truly the most supportive and kind individuals while they have been teaching me this very strange beast of a craft. The atmosphere that they created at Mythical Wizard Tattoo is so welcoming and they have taught me so many things that I will always be grateful for. I also would say my sister Keely. She has been by my side since I was just a baby and has supported me in all of my endeavors. She was the first person to get a tattoo from me and I cannot express how much I love her with words. She is the strongest person I know and inspires me everyday.
