We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Joe Uribe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary Joe, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Honestly I’ve always wanted to start or have my own brick and mortar store front. As far as what I wanted I had no clue. I either wanted a salon, restaurant or a bar, and truthfully I was mentally exhausted! I would research constantly what licenses and permits I needed, or “how to” questions. There were many times I wanted to throw in the towel! But the more research I did the more knowledge I gained in the entrepreneur industry. Really my thought process began after I did my research and that’s when the real questions to myself started becoming my reality. “Am I going to profit?”
“How many Employees do I need?”
“Will I have enough to pay my employees?”
“Can I actually make it in the retail industry?”
“Will I bring in enough money to take care of my family?”
To be truthful the list goes on and on! But after praying on it for a bit I began to actually start taking those leaps to get closer to starting my business and it paid off in the end. I opened a Boutique Salon so I could make double the income. Clothes/Shopping have always been my thing and looking good so what woman wouldn’t want that? You can knock out two birds with one stone kind of thing! So yes that was a short version of my thought process!
What should our readers know about your business?
Well a lot people or customers ask me how I came up with “FOTA” or what it stands for, what does it mean etc. It’s actually a funny story. Ive always wanted to get “Fairest of Them all” tattooed on me, so one day my husband and I were outside drinking and going over business names. All of a sudden he told me I should name it Fota, now mind you I’m drunk and so confused on why in the world he’s saying I should name it Fota! Then he said because I’ve always wanted Fairest of Them all tatted on me. Then I absolutely fell involve with the name! So the name is like a part of me! So I’m definitely most proud of my business name! I got to where I’m at today by honestly just having faith in myself, pushing myself to be and do better. I knew I didn’t want to settle and I really wanted to make my dreams become reality. “Either you run the day or the day runs you.” is a quote ive always stuck with because it’s true, basically I needed to make sure anything that involved my time was valued. Any business owner or entrepreneur has never had it easy, especially on their come up. I literally had to change my ways, clear my mind of all the negative, focus on the positive, leave people behind, and solely pour myself into my dream. Since becoming successful and finally gaining my business I will say ive grown up more. My mind set is completely different, now I barely have time for anything but work. I get sad when I can’t go on a trip or go out because now my life has so much going on. But then I realize this is what I wanted and what I worked for, this what I sacrificed those days for and I couldn’t be happier. I would love for the world to know that my story can be yours, that anything you set your heart and mind to you can achieve. Dont ever sell yourself short and always make a positive affirmation for the day! “Either you run the day or the day runs you”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Knowing my best friend, she’s very adventurous! We’ve visited everything in DFW! But our favorite is El Chingon in Fort Worth off 7th street, its a mexican restaurant/bar. They have the best tacos and fun margaritas! Then I would definitely take her thrift shopping because we love big old sweaters! Depending on the weather I love Burgers Lake or Pirates Cove! Honestly anywhere fun we go is with my husband and my best friend or family we always have a good time at Baja Cantina in Keller or Drunken Crab in Fort Worth! The most exciting people to be with are my kids! they make everything better in their own little way!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Man! I have a HUGE list! But my first shoutout will definitely be to God my lord and savior! Because through EVERYTHING he’s my rock and knew what I was destined to become! So honestly I owe it all to him! He gave me the guidance and put the people in my path to get to where I needed. Second would be my husband, who’s my backbone! He pushes me the most and sees the potential in me i never see. Third would be my family my mom & dad, my kids, my in-laws, my friends they’re my biggest supporters I love them so much. And shout out to y’all ShoutoutDFW y’all are really helping fellow entrepreneurs all around the metroplex get their name out there, that’s amazing and I truly admire it!
