We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Corwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mark, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I’ve always been a firm believer that the greatest rewards always come after the greatest risks. There is nothing wrong with people that take the easy and safe path, that just isn’t me. I drive and push myself every single day to excel in all aspects of life. I think one look at my background shows that the “safe and easy path” is not the one I ever choose. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t take risks which is why I will continue to do so.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I really enjoy the business world. I look at business as a competitive game. I get up each morning and challenge myself to do more than the previous day. I strive to increase our business footprint and name brand recognition each and every day. Again, to be the best, I need to do what others aren’t willing to do. Get up at 4:30am and exercise to clear the mind and then 100% crystal clear focus on driving business. There’s an old saying, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” I got into the hot sauce business by accident actually. I love cooking and was looking in my fridge for some sauce to cook with but the flavor always cooks out and I’m just left with vinegar and heat. So, standing there in front of my fridge I decided to create my own. I dove head first into research and started making different sauces and cooking with them until there was one that passed the ultimate test….my kids had to enjoy it! Anybody can make a novelty hot sauce. I wanted to create a sauce with awesome flavor that was perfect for every meal and snack and also could be cooked with. That’s how Freedom Hot Sauce was born. I then sent cases to my buddies I served with and asked them to post pictures on social media for marketing. The Freedom started spreading and Fox News, Fox and Friends, did a spotlight on us for Small Business Saturday. The best thing about Freedom Hot Sauce is that I get to help lots of Veteran Service Organizations (VSO) by sponsoring their events across the country. Besides my family, helping Veterans is my true passion.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m honestly a homebody. I don’t go out often. I spend my nights/weekends with my family and coaching their little league sports. I do have quite a few buddies I served with that want to come to Texas to go hunting so that’s something I’d take them to go do. Maybe go do a little hog hunting and campfire at night. I actually just went hog hunting with a bunch of Spec Ops brothers last weekend and all the proceeds went to the Recon and Sniper Foundation.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The biggest influence on my life would have to be my father. He was also a former Marine and instilled the discipline and work ethic into my daily life from a very early age. He’s the one that taught me about “Servant Leadership” and how to first be a good follower so I could understand how to be a good leader. My father taught me to never accept mediocrity and that if I wanted to be the best, I had to do the things that others weren’t willing to do. Never settle, strive to be the best. That of course goes back the “Risk” aspects of life I mentioned. I took the lessons he taught me and applied them in the military and again in the business world.
