We had the good fortune of connecting with Marina McLean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marina, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life

Work balance has changed over the periods in my life. My younger years with school age children; my creativity would begin once I dropped them off at school, I would have to discipline my efforts by having strict time management skills. This would mean planning meetings, phone calls, networking, lining up projects and staying on task until they were complete. Usually, results would begin to happen in the late afternoon and then it was time to pick them up from school.

As I have got older and now an empty nester, I have a set goal each day, and that is usually interrupted by unplanned or hijacked by individuals weaving themselves into being more important and an emergency to take up my immediate time.

However, I can work in the early evening to finish my task or get up earlier in the morning to complete it and feel accomplished. I have a regiment that teaches me to be flexible, so I don’t get frustrated.
For example, my husband is an afternoon and late evening person, so if I must schedule something important, I do it first thing in the morning; so that his unplanned demand of my attention will not disrupt my creativity or the productivity. Does it work all the time? NO, but that’s the beauty of being the boss.

I am a goal setter and must complete a finished task so that I feel accomplished by the end of the day, or at least by the end of the week.

There is always a constant negotiation with myself to get things done.
My balance is “if you work hard, you play harder!”
My play hard is in the little things that I do for myself – a massage, a walk in the park buy a potted plant and repotting it. Movie night, or date night with my husband. A planned weekend trip to our favorite gateway spots out of town. (A little secret it is usually in California.)

I end my Mega Women Television show with this mantra- “Find Balance, Find Faith, Keep Hope and Stay Mega.”
As an entrepreneur it is the foundation for your life to have set principles and goals to keep you grounded and not burn out.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I am the Founder of the Non-Profit Mega Women Inc. We were launched in 2018 through a revelation God gave me, ‘Mega Women, you are a hidden economy.’ That statement grew into a conference that I launched in 2018 in New York. I focus on three main topics- Branding, Marketing and Health.

We are a faith community of dedicated Leading Ladies, Entrepreneurs, Executives, and Female Global shifters. As a dynamic movement, Mega Women offers a unique platform for women to connect through networking seminars designed to enhance their knowledge and business acumen. Our mission is to equip women with the skills and insights necessary to excel in the global marketplace.

At Mega Women, we believe in unveiling “The Hidden Economy,” a concept focused on revealing and transforming individuals’ skill sets into powerful brands and viable business enterprises. Through our empowering initiatives, we strive to guide women in honing their talents and adapting them for success in today’s competitive business landscape.

I am most proud of the scholarships that I awarded to three young women who have been the first generation to go to college. My first alumni have graduated and are still studying. I am also proud of the women that were inspired to start their business or expand it, through the conference seminars and continual follow ups.

I overcame the challenges by never giving up and working with my tenacity to find the solution. One of my many phrases, “there will always be a problem, you become the solution.’ I overcome by being a great networker, I love collaboration and that is done through developing your community and your network. Having children and being a leader taught me the power of delegation, and working with people who have more excellence and knowledge than myself.

They make me look good, and I honor and appreciate them. Another phrase, “this is a two-way street.” I look good because of your influence and participation.

I want the world to know that my story is of a person who refuses to accept that ‘this is the only way.’ I look for opportunities to fix things, sometimes that is very frustrating, as not everything can be resolved and become perfect. I am forever learning, evolving, and striving for greater. You can only do that when you collaborate with women of excellence, and you are willing to put in one hundred and ten percent. I challenge women to invest in their success and discover the hidden economy that has been untapped.
I want to see women take opportunities and rise to the greatness that is within them. When women succeed the ecosystem around them benefits.

I keep reading books of experts in my field, I listen to podcasts more these days from the industry’s best influencers. It’s important to position yourselves in this ever-shifting marketplace that we call an economy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My first shout out is to the organization that I have created called Mega Women. They influence and cheer me on, as I have been inspired, and encouraged them to be their best self. This consistently is a two-way street. We keep each other accountable, and I love highlighting their success on my social media platform. Especially my leadership network that is my proof that my influence has a broad reach and is multicultural. Christian Women In Media Association that I have been an active member, and on the board for the past fourteen plus years. These are my sisters, community, and tribe. They sharpen my skillset with accurate and current knowledge of the platform and marketplace that I am striving to always succeed in.

I would do a dis-service if I didn’t mention my late mother Clarice Headlam, who was Jamaican born and migrated to London with my late father Charles Headlam; leaving behind three young baby boys to start a better life and get an opportunity that their homeland could not offer. I am the first child born in London, and two sisters came follow me. Mom’s work ethic and discipline was unparallel now that I can look back with hindsight. Her saving money to send home to the caretakers for my brothers; and stiving to help be part of the economic stability in our home, is a life lesson that I could not pay for today. She worked and took care of two households as best as she knew how. Helping to provide love and cultural connection to both sets of family until we were all joined under one roof in London.
