Meet Macey Alexander | Wedding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Macey Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Macey, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Giving my business to the Lord. I had heard other entrepreneurs say phrases along the lines of, “make God your CEO.” I didn’t fully understand that until I built my business. For me, that looks like tithing, praying over my clients and their wedding days, and bringing joy to each session or wedding I am graced to be a part of. I am a full believer that God grants us the desires of our heart, and my heart was to build a successful photography business that allowed me to have the flexibility to be home and raise my son. It only felt right to lead the business in light of Jesus since he blessed me with it in the first place.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say this career has more challenges to navigate because I am a mom; however, I wouldn’t have gotten to this season of life if it weren’t for motherhood. Wanting to be my own boss and blend being a stay at home mom with pursuing a profession that gave me a creative outlet was a dream I wouldn’t have attempted if it hadn’t been for my son. It definitely was not easy. The risk of leaving a salary and benefits to turn a passion into a financially stable business felt daunting, but it also fueled me. I knew that this was the only way I’d be home with my kid during the week. I sunk countless hours into educating myself and investing in this business so that it could be stable. There are still goals I’d like to meet and areas I want to improve, but the achievements made in under two years has been beyond my expectations. I think the main lesson I have learned is to only compare yourself with yourself. I got caught in the wheel of comparison and wishing I had better edits, more bookings, more followers, more more more. Once I stepped back and only compared my work and achievements to my own timeline, I started to take more pride in my work and it helped my mental health as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This question cracks me up since my out-of-town best friend has a son the same age as mine, so realistically we would be doing kid-centered activities. But, if it was a girl’s only time, I would start by roasting some coffee at home from my dad’s online coffee shop- coachscoffeeco.com. He is retiring after this school year from many years of teaching and coaching football. I’d also be going to local places for coffee and breakfast as well like Cafe Duro. One afternoon would have to include a picnic setup at the Dallas Arboretum full of food and drinks from Trader Joes. We would have to visit some restaurants like SixtyVines, Dolce Riviera, and The Charlotte. As far as activities, I’d love to take her thrifting, maybe take a pottery class or just paint pottery at a place like Color Me Mine, rent some bikes and ride the loop around White Rock Lake, and lastly, go outside the city to my favorite spot in Rockwall called Honey Locust Farms to experience the cutest plant nursery and coffee shop!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh man, there are really several amazing people who have played a role in my success. The biggest, however, would have to be my husband, Jason. He has listened to countless hours of brain dump, taken PTO to be dad while I take a last minute opportunity during the week, encouraged me endlessly, and told me to chase this dream before I had any faith in myself.
