We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsey Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been obsessed with art and using it as an outlet for my feelings. Growing up, my grandmother who was more like a mother to me, taught me everything she new about art. Art was our thing, it was how we bonded and that’s all I wanted to do. I was able to keep jobs long term but was never really happy where I was at. I even became a mortician and did that for a few years. As creepy as it may be to say, I did really love that career, it just wasn’t enough. I was still wishing I was drawing or painting all day instead. So, I decided to finally push myself out of my comfort zone and take a risk getting into the tattoo industry and it’s definitely been a wild ride so far.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wish I could say it’s been easy but that just wouldn’t be true. I’ve definitely had my ups and downs and even butted heads with a few artist but everything that’s happened I’m grateful for. You can’t let small encounters get in the way of your progress, I was told I would never become a tattoo artist and my art was crap by a mentor. Look at me now. I’m not the best but I continue to improve and learn, if I had let the small hurtful words of small minded people get in the way of what I wanted I wouldn’t be here. You just can’t let stuff like that hold you back. You have to constantly tell yourself you’re a badass and the people that say these things about you are only threatened because they are stuck in the same spot and don’t want you to grow.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this to my grandmother and father, they were always supportive of me and were the two people I went to for guidance and help. Also would like to say thank you to my sister Jocelyn who is probably my biggest fan. She was the person who suggested I become a tattoo artist and even offered to pay for all my supplies to help me get started. I want to shoutout everyone I work with at Valkyrie, a few of us have been working together for 3-4 years and everything I’ve learned I’ve learned from them. I love the new artist that have joined the shop as well and look forward to learning from them. So, everything I have I owe to these people, because they never gave up on me and continue to want to see me grow as I want to see them grow as well.
