We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Ewald and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lily, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always wanted to be an actress because I feel as though it is a super power of sorts. I have always enjoyed being able to bring characters to life both on the stage and on the screen. There is something so powerful about being able to make people feel connected to someone that doesn’t actually exist just by watching them. It’s fascinating that actors can be so good at connecting with their audience that people leave the theater feeling all of the emotions. Whether they leave crying or belly laughing, I aspire to have that much of an impact on people one day. I also just love performing, it brings me so much joy, and being in front of a camera or on the stage is where I feel I can be my true self. I started off doing community theater when I was 8 with my first show being 101 Dalmatians, and my passion just grew from there. Over the years, I participated in many more shows, loving every bit of it. When I was 10 I decided to try out screen acting and fell in love with that form as well. Since then, I have wanted to do nothing more than continue to take every opportunity to perform that comes my way. Which leads me to now, I am currently a freshman at NYU studying Drama at the Tisch School of the Arts!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In this industry you face rejection a lot. Often it’s not even because you were a bad actor, it’s usually small factors that you can’t control. “You’re too short.” “We are looking for a blonde, not a brunette.” “We need someone who looks older, you just look too young.” Sometimes the reason that you don’t book a job is simply due to factors you can’t control. They say “for every 100 auditions is 1 call back,” and that rings all too true. I have realized that in an industry like this you cannot get discouraged and just have to keep pushing, because eventually your hard work will pay off. I have been training and auditioning for many years now and although I have heard a lot of “no”, I have also heard a fair amount of “yes.” As I said this is a tough industry, and I am very proud of my ability to continue persevering through it all. I am looking forward to the future as I continue to further my training and become the best actor that I can be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My town of Andover, Massachusetts is pretty boring to say the least. There isn’t much to do unless you want to go downtown and attempt to find a parking spot for an hour. There are some good eats though like Brooksy’s Pizza where my friend Kerrin works. I would love to take a visitor there to get the Korean BBQ Short Rib Pizza because it’s delicious. Despite Andover being mostly boring, my friends and I always find ways to still have fun even if that’s as simple as just hanging out at someone’s house. When I’m not in Andover though, I am spending the majority of my time up at my summer house in Biddeford, Maine. This is definitely where I would take a best friend who was visiting the area because it’s so peaceful. I would take them specifically to Hills Beach, where we could walk the sand bar to Basket Island and hunt for hermit crabs along the way. We could explore downtown, go to Old Orchard Beach or even Kennebunkport one day. I think we could end every day off with a beautiful sunset walk either on the beach or on the street. Biddeford is my happy place, and I think anyone visiting Maine should absolutely spend some time in this beautiful town.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Steve Blackwood and Brittany Shapiro were two of my very first acting teachers who believed in me and taught me so much. I would also like to shoutout Nate Allen, who is one of my best friends and has one of the most creative directorial minds I know. From making small short films when we were little to now having completed our first ever feature film “Bonsai”, I value the advice you have given me along the way and the many adventures we have had together. Finally, I want to shout out my Dad, twin brother Alex, Auntie Deb, and especially my Mom for their unwavering love and support throughout everything. I would be nowhere without their encouragement to keep going.
