We had the good fortune of connecting with Leigh Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leigh, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Investing the time to develop new habits has helped me succeed. We have all heard the 21 days myth and when it sounds too good to be true it usually is. I interpreted the message to be it takes a minimum of 21 days to create a habit and found it generally took me longer to integrate the action into my goals. If I believed that creating a specific habit would benefit me personally and professionally, I stuck with it. I found it easier to change a pattern than to create a new habit.
Making self-care a priority is one habit that has helped me succeed. I had to learn how to put myself first and recognize that self-care is not drinking a glass of wine and watching Netflix. Self-care is committing to lifestyle choices (food, sleep, exercise) that restore and revitalize my brain, body, and spirit. The great thing about habits is once you get them down, they operate automatically, they build on each other, and are lifelong. Bringing positive psychology into your life by forming positive habits will lead to success on many different levels.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Brain Performance Center is a behavioral health center dedicated to improving all aspects of brain health with individualized, innovative, and quality care. We work with individuals for personal growth, we work with managers to incorporate brain health into their leadership practices, and we work on an educational level with presentations and workshops. We focus on creating change at the brain level, strengthening and increasing brainpower by making new connections and mental processes that address common conditions, ADHD, anxiety, and depression that interfere with the quality of life, relationships, and careers. We do this with state-of-the-art brain training, coaching, and counseling programs.
The business has evolved since 2009, when we focused on individual care to today, where the goal is to create positive social change around brain health. We want to work on the organizational level too, where we can impact more people. Work doesn’t make people unhappy; the workplace does, and we want to be a part of a change that incorporates brain heath into leadership practices that builds acceptance and understanding of brain health.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Dallas is a great city with so much to offer. On a cultural level, The Dallas Museum of Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, and the Perot Center are top-notch. If you are looking for an extraordinary meal, the Monarch is one of my favorites. There are so many great places to eat, Hillstones, and the new Neighborhood Services are places you are likely to find me. All the restaurants in Highland Village Park offer an experience. If you want some good people-watching, there is the Katy Trail, Klyde Warren Park, and NorthPark, which also offers great shopping!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom taught me to stay true to myself and believe in myself because I had the power within to succeed.
