We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Talbot Gillan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren Talbot, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
Just start. Don’t wait to be perfect. Don’t wait to have all of your ducks in a line. Just take that first step. You will be waiting forever if you wait for everything to align.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Holistic Certified Nutritionist, meaning… I believe that everything is connected. Often, in Western Medicine we isolate symptoms of discomfort and aim to remedy them. I look at the bigger picture, as if every piece of your health and well-being is a larger puzzle to be solved.
I grew up in the pharmaceutical industry, my dad making patient information for well respected pharmaceutical giants for over 35 years. While I believe Western Medicine is important, it has been a 15 year battle advocating the importance of eating real food as preventative medicine, versus the standard thinking that medicine should be our first line of defense against disease.
For that reason, I have often felt like an odd duck. I did not have a close community, or role models I could follow to open and build my own private practice. It would have been so much easier to have just agreed with what was being taught, (or not taught) and accept the Food Pyramid as my own foundation for balance and well-being.
Being the odd one out can often feel defeating and lonely. You have to get really clear on your WHY in order to keep moving. My WHY is Mental Health. I am very interested in how our diet and lifestyles affect Mental Health.
I really want my clients to understand how their decisions impact every aspect of their well-being (not just their weight).
Something that really sets me apart is that I am both a nurturer and an educator at my core. I want clients to feel empowered and inspired moving forward… not “bad” about their decisions. Wellness should be fun and it most certainly is not black and white, which is why I also take the time to create customized blueprints for my clientele– taking into account various aspects of wellness.
Everything I do is personalized for the individual based on their lifestyle, likes, dislikes, medical history and wellness goals and it is designed to feel good (not restrictive).
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was in town from Los Angeles for the weekend…
I would have organic green juices from The Gem stocked in the fridge– my favorite juices are the Platinum Veggie and Flawless (both contain zero fruit) and are nutrient dense and alkalizing, which is always a necessary compliment to a fun weekend.
Workouts: One morning we would hit up a C7 Rebounder class off Oak Lawn and the next day, Eve by Taylor in the Design District. These are my favorite low cortisol (hormone friendly) classes in Dallas. Killer workouts with excellent results are my thing.
One early afternoon we would grab an iced tea and bite at Flower Child before stopping over at Max Feet for a quick 30 minute foot reflexology massage. There is nothing fancy about the place but it’s great for moving the lymph, increasing circulation and ahem… getting rid of any sluggishness after a late night . 😉 Depending on our vibe, we might stop in for an ozone sauna session at The Ozone Bar to sweat out any lingering toxins.
One afternoon we would grab a light lunch and drink at Origin Kitchen + Bar, where I trust the quality of food being sourced and appreciate their ingredient transparency. I am ordering a bun-less Bison burger with cheese and a few sides. We would walk to Knox Henderson and find a spot to catch up over a mocktail, or cocktail, depending on what we are feeling.
We are absolutely hitting up GEMMA one night for dinner. You can’t go wrong with any of their dishes, wine, or cocktails.
At some point, we are definitely grabbing a glass of wine at the gorgeous bar of Mister Charles and checking out the oysters at Greenpoint.
For Sunday brunch, we would grab a bite at Hudson House on Lovers (I love the ahi tuna. It is so incredible, I don’t mind the up-charge for adding it to my Greek salad) and finishing up the day with a walk on the Katy Trail.
I am a creature of habit. I love ambiances, good quality food and conversation but my bestie and I also share a love for staying active, Weather permitting, Dallas can be a great place for all of the above– and shenanigans.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Being an entrepreneur can often feel like being on an island.
It is lonely without the right support.
I have always struggled to ask for help, both in my personal and professional life. I can laugh at the irony, because part of what I do for a living is hold others accountable. I am The Helper… that struggles to ask for help.
I have learned that having a supportive community is absolutely vital for overall success.
This past year I can really credit Jazmin, the office manager at FeminologyMD (out of which, I office) for pushing me to speak up, speak out and embrace my goofy personality. Jaz has been a huge cheerleader, constantly reminding me of my value. I did not realize I needed that kind of support until she stepped into my life.
Another game changer for me was being introduced to the workout community at C7 and the Founder, Shannon. What a difference it makes getting in a killer workout and have a blast doing it. Shannon has been such a supportive friend and cheerleader and it means the world.
It is nice to know you can do things alone but that you do not have to. In fact, I would not recommend being a team of one.
