We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Kent and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
Ah so many things! Right now, one of my main inspirations are great leaders throughout history. How did these people inspire those around them, how did they achieve real change and how did they get through their toughest moments? Most of these leaders have these characteristics in common, conviction for their goals, real but optimistic views, and nerve. If others are going to follow you and together you have something to achieve you have to lead by example and adopt these characteristics.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The reason I started working in hairstyling is because I was always fascinated and intrigued by it from a young age. The reasons I’ve chosen to continually pursue it is because of three things. I love working with people. Brightening someone’s day with conversation and by making them feel beautiful is truly special and valuable. Second, I love working with my hands, to envision something and then bring that vision to reality with my own hands is satisfying. Third, I love how Jovie is a team and working with others with the shared goal of making everyone feel special and beautiful is fantastic. To pursue a career in hairstyling is to pursue styling great hair but, what makes it artistic is for it to inspire people, our clients, our team, passersby into feeling something. I am most proud of the team I work with. We support and encourage each other everyday to make our clients feel special. I could not have gotten to where I am today without the mentorship I received from Jo and Julie, the founders of Jovie Salon. I learned everything I needed to know through working and growing at Jovie Salon. I’ve learned that all those reasons I listed above of why I love and pursue a career in hairstyling ground me. If you know why you do or love something you’ll never lose your way and you’ll always aspire for more learning, growing, and success. In my case that includes the whole Jovie Salon team. We build each other up and I love that now I’m helping people find and pursue their passion for hairstyling.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I were to show someone around this area, we would have to start with food and shopping of course! Historical Downtown Mckinney, Watters Creek in Allen, and The Shops at Legacy are great to walk around and explore all the great restaurants and shops. So much variety in just a few stops. The Angelica is also a great place to watch some unique independent movies, we would definitely have to stop there. Another fun thing to do right now is go by the fair and see Big Tex and go to the Arboretum in Dallas for all the fun fall activities!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Jo and Julie Chung of Jovie Salon have been the best mentors to me throughout my journey!
