We had the good fortune of connecting with Lateefah Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lateefah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to be in control in how things were done and who I worked with. I knew as an employee I would never have that and I would be limited in my income. Being your own boss puts you in control of all of that. You can decide your hours, your days off, who works with you and the overall vision for your brand.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are an orthodontic office. We are located in Irving and Grand Prairie, TX. We specialize in myofunctional orthodontics which is tries to find the cause of your orthodontic problem so it can be better addressed and fixed. We treat patients from 6-100 and offer clear aligners, braces, and retainers. I got where I am today thru hard work and dedication. Selecting good team members who understand the vision and culture of my business was also very important and contributes to part of my success. Also, enjoying looking at numbers and running a business has also helped. I think the most important reason my business is successful is though is because we have a very strong emphasis on patient satisfaction. My patients are my biggest referral source.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from New York City, I like places where there are crowds and places to be out. We would likely do a late night in Deep Ellum and The Shops of Legacy. We would check out a Cowboy or Maverick Game. Spend some time on one of the lakes around DFW and hit up Six Flags for some thrills.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I was in college I was assigned to a Dean who advised you on classes to take and things you needed to do to be successful in the college. Her name was Dean Turner and she got me an internship in a Dental office. It was that internship and Dr. Ocasio (the dentist that employed me for my internship) that led me to choose my profession as an orthodontist. I am truly grateful to both of them for their help and guidance.
