We had the good fortune of connecting with LaJoy Grant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaJoy, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started LaBrows Beauty Studio, I was a complete workaholic—pouring everything into my business and leaving little room for personal life. As an entrepreneur, especially in the beauty industry, it’s easy to feel like you have to be constantly grinding to grow. I would work long hours, take on every client possible, and stay up late perfecting my craft. At that time, I thought success meant always being “on.”

But becoming a mom changed everything. My daughter, who is now five, made me rethink what true success looks like. I didn’t just want to build a thriving business—I wanted to build a life where I could be present for her, too. So I had to reimagine how I could serve my clients and reach my goals while also being the mom she deserves.

I became more intentional about my time, setting boundaries, automating parts of my business, and creating systems that allowed me to work smarter, not harder. I also focused more on education and mentorship, which lets me impact more people without being tied to my studio chair 24/7. Now, my balance isn’t perfect, but it’s purposeful. I’ve learned that building a successful business shouldn’t come at the cost of missing out on life’s most precious moments.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart in the beauty industry is that I am a lifelong learner. I don’t believe in staying stagnant—I’m always researching trends, mastering new techniques, and evolving to ensure my clients receive groundbreaking experiences. The beauty industry is constantly changing, and I’ve built LaBrows Beauty Studio on the foundation of continuous education and innovation. Whether it’s perfecting permanent makeup techniques, adding restorative services like areola tattooing, or teaching others how to build their beauty businesses, I make it a priority to stay ahead and bring value to my clients and students.

This journey has been anything but easy—it’s been incredibly challenging. Building a business, especially in such a competitive industry, requires resilience, faith, and an unshakable belief that things will get better even when times are tough. I’ve faced setbacks, self-doubt, and moments where I questioned if I was on the right path. But what kept me going was knowing that my purpose is greater than my obstacles. My faith has been my anchor, reminding me that every challenge is just a stepping stone to something bigger.

Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned along the way are to never give up, avoid self-sabotage, and, most importantly, not compare my journey to anyone else’s. In the age of social media, it’s easy to feel like you’re not moving fast enough, but I’ve learned that my unique path is exactly what it’s supposed to be.

More than anything, I want the world to know that LaBrows Beauty Studio is about community—it’s about uplifting other artists, helping them grow, and creating a space where beauty professionals can thrive. My mission isn’t just to transform appearances but to inspire confidence, success, and financial freedom for those looking to break into this industry. I built this business with the mindset that when one of us wins, we all win.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend visited Dallas for a week, I’d make sure they experienced the perfect mix of culture, food, and entertainment. We’d explore Downtown Dallas, visiting the Dallas Museum of Art, and Klyde Warren Park, then head to Deep Ellum for street art, live music, and visit one of the legendary barbeque spots. A stop in the Bishop Arts District for boutique shopping and great dining. If we need a peaceful escape we would head to the Dallas Arboretum. I love STEM so we’d also visit the Perot Museum and possibly the Dallas or Fort Worth Zoo. We would shop at Galleria Dallas which is about 8 minutes from our current studio location. Evenings would be filled with skyline views at The Henry, omakase at Mābo, and live performances or The Bomb Factory. To wrap up, everyone loves a great brunch so we would indulge at one of the hottest brunch spots and explore the Dallas Farmers Market—I think this would be a perfect blend of Dallas’ culture, flavors, and energy!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Success is never a solo journey, and I am beyond grateful for the incredible people who have poured into me, lifted me up, and reminded me of my purpose along the way. My family has been my foundation—my mother, my sisters, and my brother have been my biggest supporters, always reminding me of my strength and resilience. Whether it was watching my daughter so I could chase my dreams or simply being there with words of encouragement on tough days, their unwavering love has kept me grounded.

I also want to give a special shoutout to the mentors and coaches who have helped shape not just my business, but my mindset and faith. My beauty mentor, Amy Ledgister, has been an incredible guide in my PMU journey, pushing me to refine my craft and step into my full potential. My business and spiritual coach, Tameka Denise, has been a true light, helping me see the power of God’s gifts within me and reminding me to lead with faith in both business and life. And my business coach and encourager, Valencia Gibson, has been instrumental in helping me strategize, grow, and scale LaBrows Beauty Studio with confidence.

Each of these amazing individuals has helped me see what they see in me—God’s perfect gifts, placed within me to excel, impact others, and create a legacy. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their love, wisdom, and belief in me, and I’m forever grateful for their presence in my journey.
