Meet Kris D’sha | Actor, Dancer, Singer, and Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kris D’sha and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kris, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursed an artistic and creative career, because the arts saved me as a child. I lost a family member that I loved deeply when I was going into high school. I lost all hope and motivation for school, learning, and life most days. Music class, dance class, and theater was the only thing that kept me motivated. It became a tremendous part of my life and I learned to heal and become vulnerable through it. My art aided me in releasing things that I never imagined was there. It taught me how to see life through a different lens; one that loved and was optimistic.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I will say that this road has not been easy, but I’ve learned that every moment was worth it. I’ve had a huge support system throughout, so I could be a mother and follow my dreams of being an actor and performer. I started dancing in church at the age of 7. I began training as a classical vocalist in middle school, and throughout college. My senior year at Booker T. Washington, when everyone told me that it wasn’t a smart idea to switch over from music to dance, I followed my heart and did so. I saw all of the dancers every day walking out of the dance room, and I desired so badly to do it. I was afraid, but one day I inquired, and they told me that I could still audition. I made it and danced my senior year through college at TJC, and K D Studio. I danced in Dallas Black II Company in New York, and when we made it back to Dallas, I realized that something was missing. I recalled an acting school that my God sister attended when I was about 11. I called and set up an interview. Michael Serrecchia gave me a free ticket to see The Full Monty at Theatre Three in Dallas and I fell in love. I began my career in musical theater and nearly sixteen years later I began my career in film. I want the world to know that no matter what people may say, if you desire something, with hard work it can happen. Words have power. I received an opportunity for a year long tour when my children were younger, and I had the option to leave my town. I recall telling God that “I want to parent my children and be an amazing actor. Please fix it to where I can do both.” The next week I received calls about a film and things took off from there. I learned that I didn’t have to compromise myself to get what I wanted. Although I had to push through pain and tears sometimes, I grew to using it in my art. I would encourage people to never give up, because every day that you work, you get closer and closer to where you desire to be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely have to go to Spa Castle first for some relaxation, drinks, amazing food, and massages. Even without the massages it is an amazing place to go. We would also have to visit Rodeo Goat for some incredible burgers and cheese fries. The Ivy Bar is a nice spot for drinks, and they have an outdoor area with heaters, a full bar, and a great vibe. Mexican food is one of my favorites, so we would have to stop by Taqueria La Ventana for some street tacos.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out my parents that played a huge part in my decision making early on. My father encouraged me to start training as a classical vocalist. My mother has been a huge support system throughout my acting career, and a huge reason why I was able to continue during challenging times in life. My family has been amazing in every way. Rock White has been someone that I value in the film industry and someone that I call my mentor. I had a dance teacher that saw beyond what I could see in myself, and she spoke up for me when I didn’t realize my own voice. I am forever grateful for Carla Wattley from Booker T. Washington’s dance department. I have to give a special show out to an amazing director and actor, that I call friend A.D. Scott. Also, a special thank you to my sisters in The Chosen Inc. Dallas has a huge network of writers, directors, producers, and actors that I am grateful to work alongside, and I am proud of the work and growth that is coming from the sacrifices and diligence. Lastly but not least, thank you to my two beautiful children that are a huge reason that I have fought for my dreams so long. They are simply amazing. Thank you to La Bell and John John Lewis III for being the greatest definitions of a friend. I love you all.
