We had the good fortune of connecting with kourtney brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi kourtney, what is the most important factor behind your success?
the single most important factor behind the success of TINGE is our new view of beauty. confidence is our catalyst; body positivity is our native language. our five foundational beliefs shape everything we do, say, and create.

belief one: we’re rewriting the rules of beauty
we’re building a brand and shaping an industry that we we want for ourselves + future generations. with that in mind, we thoughtfully avoid language that implies you should look any different than the way you feel most beautiful or confident. you won’t find words like perfection, flawless, or imperfection in our dictionary. to us, those things don’t exist.

belief two: you deserve to be the beholder of your own beauty
we’re taking beauty back from the eyes of the beholder. why? you deserve that power. how do you feel most beautiful? protect it. hold it tight. don’t give it away to anyone else.

belief three: makeup as a choice
never a requirement. makeup may only be skin deep, but the way it makes you feel matters. does it make you feel good? wear it. view it as an art? love it. feel like its an obligation? leave it. both are admirable + empowering. we celebrate those who feel comfortable in either or both forms. after all, our differences are what makes beauty beautiful.

belief four: body beauty is a mental + physical matter
bodies are special, unique, and sacred. what we feed our bodies and believe in our minds is significant. we elevate choice, confidence, and individuality recognizing that even after products are washed away, our goal is that each individual is left feeling even more confident and beautiful in the skin that they’re in.

belief five: confidence as a catalyst
the many messages and reviews we receive prove, that not only did we say that TINGE would be a brand powered by feeling, but we truly are. it’s at the core of all we say, do, and create. lucky for us, it’s not stopping with us. it’s been felt throughout our beloved community and unlike any product, confidence cannot be washed away.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TINGE exists to create a body lineup that you can be proud of with products that can be worn and loved by every body, ultimately giving you the added confidence to feel good in the skin that you’re in.

we believe body is the next big move of beauty. over 90% of skin lies below the neck, yet less than 10% of beauty products sold are designed for the body. the skin concerns we experience on our faces are oft times even more elevated on our bodies and require sophisticated formulas to properly address them. as a body beauty brand, we’re reimagining care for the body from body makeup and beyond.

we got our start in april of last year with the launch of the TINGE tint, a water + transfer-resistant body makeup that doesn’t look so made up.  it’s loved for creating an undetectable, even canvas on the skin and easing the appearance of redness, vitiligo, kp, melasma, age spots, varicose veins, bruises, and more. we launched the tint exclusively on tingebeauty.com in a range of 12 shades. each of our 12 shades were intentionally designed with the undertone top of mind to be worn and loved in every season and for every occasion.

our product pipeline is packed with body-centric products and we can’t wait to bring innovative treatments and star ingredients to the body in ways that have never been done before. later this year, we’ll launch three new products— each of which are elevated, body-centric skincare essentials packed with a punch.

as for lessons learned along the way, my personal mantra is “comfort will never get you to the place you want to be or the person you want to become!”

as a first-time founder, i’ve found that entrepreneurship is such a resilience game and it’s packed with growth at every corner. building a brand from the ground up requires another level of grit and commitment. you have to really want what you’re building and be so relentless in execution, problem solving, and finding answers when it often times feels like there aren’t any.

as an entrepreneur, my job is to keep the vision close, build in that direction, and clean up the complicated (yet super rewarding!) work as it comes.

building TINGE has taught me that problems don’t dissolve when you find success. the more successful you are (in work and in life), the steeper the problems and learning curves get. but that’s the beauty of the journey—the tough moments ultimately show you what you’re made of!

don’t let discomfort discourage you! being an entrepreneur is truly the most rewarding work! as zig ziglar says “set a goal so big you can’t achieve it until you grow into the person who can.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
i love getting outside and catching fresh air so an eatzi’s picnic in the park or long walk on the katy trail is always a must! drake’s is my favorite spot to take friends for an intimate, elevated dinner atmosphere and in my personal opinion some of the best pizza and coldest martinis in town! yum! sushi is my love language and you can never go wrong with indulging at namo or nori for handrolls. does shopping count as exercise? a stroll through highland park village or north park are favorite pastimes of mine!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
whew, can I dedicate my shoutout to a village? from the earliest of days, my parents have been the most incredible supporters and instilled a no dream too big, no task too small mentality in me. they would always sing a song over me that included the line “don’t you laugh, watch me grow, someday i’ll be your ceo.” so i like to think they manifested my current reality as a founder by song! haha

dr. westbrook, david thomison, and jennifer ellis were vital in helping me get started and in finding my step. you believed in me before i knew to believe in myself and i’m forever indebted to you all for that.

to our team of investors and advisors, erika lucas and catherine collins, thank you locking arms with me on our way to making beauty for every body a reality and for sticking with me through the highs, lows, and everything in between!
