We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thoughts…welcome to my brain. For a little history, I have loved interior design for as long as I can remember. I would come home and watch TLC’s Trading Spaces after school then proceed with moving our living room around. (Sorry mom, for every time you came home to a different arrangement, also sorry to my friends parents whom I’d also rearrange their rooms when I ran out of ways to rearrange mine). I ended up going to college for interior design and had the time of my life. After graduating, I got married and started a family. I always said growing up that I wanted to be a wife, mom and an interior designer. Somewhere along the way, life just took off and I laid that dream down. Now fast forward the span of a decade, designing my own home, helping friends and family with theirs, and sharing the process of our custom home build on Instagram, I get a text from someone whom we share mutual friends with. My friend had mentioned my name when discussing her own and said “Contact Kim Brown, she can help.” I didn’t even own my own business, she just knew I was gifted in this area and shared about me, and something about that text took me from 0-100.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
You know what I love about us creatives? Is it’s never a saturated market no matter how many times we let ourselves believe that lie. There’s truly something for everyone. We get to put out into the world our gifts and talents and let our people find us. What I love about the brand I’ve built is my why, for joy to be the foundation in every home, thru every season. The name “Perfect Joy” in my business name is rooted from a season full of grief and darkness. A worst season of my life if you will, that I somehow found joy in, and an abundance of it. I have coined the phrase “perfect joy” as my life motto, and getting to go into peoples homes, their most sacred places, and be apart of transforming those spaces carries weight. A weight that has nothing to do with my throw pillow selection, or decor accents but leaving a space better than I found it and creating a home people love to live in, bringing beauty into homes is something to be proud of.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay, I am a Texas girl and if I don’t shout-out my favorite bbq places I am doing a disservice. If you are near the Dallas area hit up Heim BBQ or Lockhart BBQ in Bishop Arts. While you’re in Bishop Arts, head over to Tejas for a margarita (or two) and grab their mini beef tacos.

For a fun night out, I always love Texas Live in Arlington. PBR is a fun bar that’s casual and good music!

If weather permitting (Texas heat) and depending on timing with movies, I love going to the Coyote Drive In, in the middle of Ft Worth. A movie screen with the Ft Worth sky line lit up at night is beautiful.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, he’s the best of the best. I have a picture of him from when we were in college, asleep at the dining table while I was up all night working on an interior design project. He’s been around since the beginning. He’s seen me nerd out at floor-plans and home decor for almost fifteen years now. He’s the one who insisted on selling our first home so that I could design our current home and pick out every single detail. Hearing his side of that is always my favorite because it’s so genuine.
