We had the good fortune of connecting with Kierah Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kierah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business was my kids. The 9-5 that I previously worked resulted in me missing several of my sons “firsts”. After having my daughter, I couldn’t stomach missing any of hers. Making cakes was a way for me to do something I love, and still make a bit of money.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When I started this business, something I knew I wanted to do was to offer the every day person a nice cake for their celebrations. I believe this is a big factor in why I consistently have multiple orders every weekend. My prices are high enough for me to make a profit, but low enough for most people to afford. However, pricing has not been easy due to everyone having different budgets. I find myself wondering if I’m not charging enough but then fear that if I quote someone too high that I may lose the business entirely. I have taken a couple pricing courses from other home bakers and have found a happy medium for the time being. I want everyone to know that every cake that I get to make is a new “favorite” and so much love goes into each creation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was in town, our first stop would be Parlor Doughnuts for breakfast. I haven’t had a flavor I didn’t like yet! We would go to Joe T’s strictly for the margaritas and patio hangs. I would take her to Reservoir for the chicken fried chicken that is covered in the best jalapeño gravy and we’d stop by Kung Fu Saloon for some games. We would get tacos from Frezko’s and wash it down with an Andy’s custard. We have a beautiful patio at home and would likely grill and watch the kids play in the yard in our downtime.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve got to give the credit to my family. My husband for always being honest when it comes to the appearance and flavor of a cake, my parents for funding my hobby when I was in high school (baking is NOT cheap), my sister for always cheering me on, and my aunt, uncle, and grandparents for pushing me to do something that I love as a career. Without them, I don’t believe I would have had the courage to start my business.
