We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiandra Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kiandra, what are you inspired by?
For as long as I can remember, the world around me has always served as my platter of inspiration. My life experiences and the people I’ve encountered have sculpted inspiration for written words that will last a lifetime. Women inspire me. Risk-takers inspire me. Young children with hope in their eyes inspire me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One thing that I love about being an artist, is the wide range of creativity I get to explore. I remember a time when I always felt like I had to choose one or the other of my gifts, but as of recently, I’ve learned that each part of my artistry serves a rightful place in my life. Getting to the point of releasing my debut poetry collection has been far from easy but I have learned that faith over fear is key. Every day is about waking up and making the active choice to choose yourself, and do it unapologetically!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh, my best friend is coming to town? So much to do, so little time. Go-to for Drinks: State and Allen and Sky Blossom Eatery/Treats: Saint Ann, Picole Pops, Doc B’s, El Come Tacos Hang out: Sunday Funday in Deep Elum Deep Ellum is always a fun area to take friends that are in town for the weekend! So many cool spots and of course, the murals.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It goes without saying that I would not be where I am today had it not been for my mother. Her constant push to always strive towards greatness has helped me in more ways than one. I also must admit that one of my favorite books, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, has also been worth the shoutout. This book has inspired me to craft major change in my life, which has even led to the latest creation of my debut book, Soulful Bloom. It is now available on Amazon.
