We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerstin Morlock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kerstin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first started photography in 2019, I never had the thought of wanting to turn my hobby into a business. I always had fun just taking pictures of my horses and some cattle that my friends close to me owned. I had a friend who was graduating and asked if I could take some quick pictures for her for graduation and that she would pay me- I loved it. That made me want to get out and start getting people to model for me. I realized that the more people I got to model for me made me love being able to capture people’s raw emotions, and their stories are something that I get pure happiness from. So I started to promote myself to get more people to let me capture their stories.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others in the industry would probably be my mindset and editing style. I like to think about my style as warm, grainy, b&w, and storytelling. I have gone through many ups and downs throughout my photography career, from not being able to get any bookings, clients canceling on me for other photographers because they are cheaper, and getting in my head not knowing where I fit in, in the industry. It hasn’t been extremely easy. I have had to work hard to get where I am at today. Something that I am very excited and proud about with my business is that I’m expanding to traveling and weddings!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A person that has truly shaped my growth in the photography industry is Reagan Glass. She has helped me in any areas that I have needed help in. She has shown me how to create and make my own style, how to grow, and how to build my website and social media accounts. If it weren’t for Reagan, I probably would not be where I am today with my business.
