We had the good fortune of connecting with Keonte Dotson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Keonte, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

I started my business to help me find myself again. When I first started I use to take pictures just for fun. After having my son I went through post partum depression. My friend encouraged me to find something that reminded me of a time when I was happy or something that reminded me of who I really am. I looked at the pictures I took and thought about how confident I was when I was behind the camera. I missed being able to help others capture precious moments and making those moments last a life time. That is how I got the idea to start my photography business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Editing and brainstorming ideas. I had to learn so much. Photography is so much more than just snapping a picture. It is about making a vision come true. People only see the results not all the work that goes into making that vision come true. One of the most challenging parts for me was learning to edit the pictures. The amount of time that goes into editing a picture is alot and it can be very frustrating. I had to learn to be patience with the process. I learned to be open to feedback and a mentorship. I was able to reach out to different people and learn so much in the process. I’m still learning even now the road to where I am now is now easy. Every photoshoot brings different learning opportunities and challenges.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Dallas has so much to offer I can’t narrow it down to just a few. I do know we would definitely visit deep ellum on the weekend. We would get to experience the night life there. I love the social life of Dallas, the music and people along with the experience of Dallas and the surrounding areas. We would find some of the many different food options as well as explore the difference things all over Dallas from live music, museums or going to a sporting event. There is never a shortage of things to do in Dallas.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I want to thank 3 special people that helped me along my journey of starting my business. I want to give credit to a very important friend Danielle Marie, she gave me my first project to work on and we are partnered together on a special project! My good friend Rashid, when I had doubt about being able to start my business he was the support behind me pushing me to do it. My wonderful son Kameron, my true motivation for everything that I do. He is the reason I keep pushing even when I want to give up. Without these 3 people, I can honestly say there would be no K. Dotson Photography!
