We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendall Awtry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendall, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor to me is being 100% authentic. With the advent of social media, it’s easy to exaggerate a lifestyle that doesn’t help your brand grow. Being real with my clients and collaborators is the most honest way to do business. I’m proud of my skills, I stand by my prices, and I look forward to each project that I get to work on.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m very proud of the success I’ve created for myself and to see how happy my clients are when they’re photos are delivered. Each smile means the world to me. Living my dream puts a smile on my face! It’s not that it wasn’t easy when I first began this journey, it just took time and practice. It’s like learing to ride a bike or sing. You have to invest your time and build a foundation of knowledge. Then just go out and practice!

What I want the world to know about me is that I love what I do, I treasure every moment I capture, and I’m so happy that I get to wake up knowing that I have found my purpose in life. Photography has saved my life. It’s the one thing that helps me express who I am. For many years, I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression. Photography has been my escapism. It’s my place of solitude. Nothing in the universe, no amount of money can replace the feeling I get when I pick up my camera and go shoot. I hope that other people can find that peace in whatever they love to do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The very first thing we would do is sightsee around DFW. There is a lot interesting places to see and experience around here like the Dallas Aquarium, Deep Elum, and The Stockyards. Next part of the trip would involve putting in a round of golf at Four Seasons and then catching a Mavericks game. Lunch, drinks and reminiscing at Dave & Busters would be in the middle of the vacation. It’s a bit of a cruise but after that we would head over to Circuit of the Americas for some car racing and go-karts (I’m a car guy so it’s mandatory we do at least one car related thing haha)! And to top it all off, I’d say we would go to a comedy club.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I know there’s a handful of people I can thank for their support over the last 12 years but one person is specific who introduced me to photography is my mother. When I was a young boy, I remember playing in the backyard one day after school and my mom came home from grocery shopping. She walked up to me, handed me a one of those kodak disposable film cameras, and said she thought I might like taking pictures. It was a pretty cloudy day, and I remember looking up a the sky and just being so fascinated by the vast array of cloud formations. So I starting taking pictures of the clouds. What got me hooked was the sound of the shutter going off each time I pressed it. Who knew that whatever inspired her to buy that camera and give it to me would be the beginning of a career that has changed my life in the greatest way possible and given me a purpose in this world.
