We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Hans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business because I saw a need in the dance community. Growing up, I was constantly dancing and trying to become the best dancer that I could be. My passion to train dancers, help them feel valued, and push them to be the absolute best that they can be really started while I was training for myself! I would take private lessons from instructors who just didn’t seem to care if I advanced or not….it always felt like I was just a dollar sign to them. When dancers take lessons from me, my goal is that they always leave feeling like they learned new skills, added to their dancer toolbox, and are excited to train!
I also do freelance choreography for dance and drill teams all over the state of Texas. After being the Assistant Drill Team Director at 2 high schools, I saw a need for crowd pleasing routines that not only students enjoyed dancing, but directors enjoyed cleaning! I have such a passion for creating visual and entertaining routines that I knew I had to bring that passion to dance teams all across the state!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a dance instructor, my goal is to always deliver completely custom, never “cookie cutter” routines and instruction. I customize absolutely everything I do for teams I work with. That can be technique, flexibility work, and choreography. I always show up knowing my stuff and I pride myself on being professional.
It has taken me years to build up my clientele, build my name in the dance community, and create a procedure for creating routines. I always go above and beyond for teams and I always want them to feel special.
My experience started when I was on drill team myself, serving as an officer my senior year. I then went on to dance for my college pom squad, Baylor University, where I served as a captain my senior year. I also danced professionally as a Dallas Mavericks Dancer. To this day, I have choreographed and worked for over 30 teams in Texas!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places to go in the area is Southlake! My favorite restaurant right now is Muchacho! If you like Mexican food, this place is amazing!
One of my favorite coffee shops is called Edison, which is located in Parker Square in Flower Mound. They have AMAZING coffee and a great atmosphere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My drill team director, Bethany Crisp, was the first person to really ignite my passion for dance! I looked up to her dance team SO much growing up, that the desire to be part of her drill team made me take my first dance class. Without her as my director, I’m not sure if I would have ever even started dancing!
