We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli A, McEwen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelli, how do you think about risk?
I absolute love taking risks! I’ve grown fond of putting myself in uncomfortable situations to help shed my social and professional insecurities. Risk taking is a major part of my career as a spokenword performer, uncensored author, event curator and entrepreneur! Every time I step on stage to perform my work, I take a risk. The risk of exposing my most intimate thoughts to a crown of strangers, not knowing how they will receive my message. It’s one of the most nerve-racking yet powerfully liberating experiences every single time! I would not be as wise as I am today had I avoided all of the uncomforttable situations in my life! Show me the way and I show you how to transverse any terrain beautifully!

I opened my spa Divinity Massage & Oasis Spa by myself! We’ll at least that’s what it felt like in the beginning! All I knew was there were 6 unfurnished rooms with mundane walls and I had to turn each of them into my dream rooms! Wow, wow, wow as I in for a journey! If I had allowed fear to debilitate me, I would not have my beautiful establishment! I would not have my books, “Blessings in Disguise” or “All the Things I Didn’t Want to Talk About,” had I not taken risks. Nor would Sacred Fantasy be a published song writer! My album, “Chosen” would not exist either or any event that I’ve successfully curated! I say all of this to say, “risk is reward!”

Many of my close friends and my mother took a risk on me as well! I thank them for pouring into my business! Anika, thank you for all of decor you gifted to the spa! Mommie, thank you for the love and support you shower into ALL of my dreams. Fella, thank you for the rewarding gifts that add into the execution of me fulfilling my goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is passionate and deep. It’s the telling of my story. The purpose to my life! It is me in visual, audio, textual and scented form! It is without limits or boundaries! No one has lived the same experiences as I have so their work will never be the same as mine. I take life stories and transverse them into poetic books that later become spokenword performances bellowed from the windpipes of my unearthly mind. These same words transform into songs and audio poems which birth albums of literary ooze that draws listeners closer to hearing the voice of God within the very echo of my baritone! I am Me (poetry) in the purest form. I deserve that isolated respect, respectfully!

I am most proud of everything I create. Having the ability to manifest a thought within my mind then turning it into a type of sharable content is such a powerful action that many take advantage of! I am thankful for my gift! Grateful that I heal others by sharing my craft! I am honored by everyone that takes the time to support me! I love my supporters! Yall are DOPE! Nah, yall are the DOPEST!

I got to where I am professionally by being authenthic to myself and my purpose! Also, by spreading love and showing support to others. One would be amazed how much support they’d get back simply by showing love. It is free to be organically giving! Plus, I’ve curated many events to showcase my talent amongst poetry lovers, constantly meeting new people and share with them what I do. Word of mouth is an impactful form of advertisment! Honestly, I live my life as an artist everyday. So, no it was not hard to get to where I currently am. Also, remembering to speak life into my dream everyday buds open doors for flowering new opportunities. There’s power in the tongue. I am what I speak!

I learned not to focus on who does not support me, no matter if it is a friend or family member, but to pour into my fanbase. These are the avocates that will expand my content to others! I do not waste vital creative energy wondering why certain people are not tapped into my greatness. All I can do is continue to walk in my calling. They’ll have no choice but to hear me!

I want the world to know that I am real! I too make mistakes and that is a part of the human experience. Sacred Fantasy/Divinity Massage & Oasis Spa are both healing areas along my journey! Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, I would pick random places to visit. My friends are just like me. We love to explore unknown territory! I may even have them blindly choose places to go! We would go skating, bowling, boating, eat everything, to museums, Jazz clubs, hiking, on bus tours, to well-known land marks, festivals, etc! As long as a positive memorable moment can be created, we’ll enjoy every second of our shenanigans.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success is for my mother, Kimberly B. From the moment of my birth she has loved me perfectly and supported every decision I’ve ever made. Her strength, beauty, wisdom, encouragement and personality have inspired me to always be my best self even when it’s draining. I also thank my brother Kevin for being the reason why I started writing poetry as a young child! A poem he wrote in 5th or 6th grade inspired my rhyming journey! I have not put down my pen since that day!
