We had the good fortune of connecting with Keithsha Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keithsha, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I think about the concept of “work life balance” I have a new view on it all completely. Previously, I was a full time employee for a behavioral health program with an ample amount of PTO. I was pleased with taking trips and vacations with friends and family knowing I had paid time off and plenty of it. However, I no longer work there and am now a full time entrepreneur. I am in my first six months and it has been balanced, but in a way that works for me and my lifestyle. I tell everyone in my life, that “you have to do what works for you.” A lot of that requires self awareness, being aware of limitations, knowing your level of tolerance, identifying what is and is not a priority and how to prioritize, the list goes on and on. I know that in order for me to function that I must rest. Whether it is in between classes, meetings, or completing paperwork I allow myself fifteen minute naps. I also minimize television watching and read to decompress rather than watching television as I noticed that it is not settling for me. I workout outside of teaching yoga classes. I eat a balanced diet daily. I meet with at least one friend per week, often times this is schedule far in advance or on my one day off. I allow myself one day of the week to do nothing at all or whatever it is that I want to do. Six days of the week I work; I meet with mentees, I teach yoga classes, network with community organizations, create content, take and make phone calls, schedule meetings for marketing, create the marketing ideas, respond to emails, create new ideas for upcoming classes, nonstop until I go to bed six days of the week. Although I still enjoy vacations with friends and family, I no longer feel the “need” to take a vacation. I created a balanced life that works for me and my needs.I have so much gratitude and really like where life is now.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Creating balance has helped me to have the mental clarity I need to constantly create individual flows for private sessions. Keep students excited about the next week by adding new twists as they grow and advance each week. I was telling a friend who transitioned from full time employee to full time entrepreneur this year that keeping faith, being genuine, and letting go of things is what has made this transition so smooth for us both. I am not sure that I have any roadblocks that I have encountered. I often remind myself that anything that takes more effort than I am willing to give, no longer serves me and I let it go, and create another way to succeed. So many times I have been grateful that I let go of the previous notion, because it resulted in not being the best idea after all. My goal is to inspire and empower each and every individual who receives a service from me, and so far I am grateful to achieve that goal, everyday.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a very picky eater but here are my favorites. Every time someone comes to visit I introduce them to Torchy’s Tacos or Velvet Tacos. But to sit and eat flavorful Mexican food with great margaritas, I would suggest Mi Cocina and Mexican Sugar. Best food places when I’m homesick and want comfort food Kitchen & Kocktails By: Kevin Kelley, Breakfast Brothers. For Italian foods I suggest Terilli’s and Ferrari’s. When I want Caribbean style food I go to a place in Arlington called Temptations. I love the wineries in Grapevine and that they get together to create wine tasting themes for consumers. Hiking at Cedar Ridge is a favorite. Live Music at the Freeman, Jazz Scat Lounge, or a Louie Piano Bar. AT&T Discovery Area, Bishop Arts District, Kylde Warren Park, there are so many different things to do here.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I started my business because I wanted to create a greater impact in areas beyond my community through yoga. Since I started this journey I cannot think of a single friend who has not promoted content, booked a virtual session, attend an in class session, provided constructive feedback while respecting my boundaries or even make a donation. Each and one of my friends has shown me that they believe in me, my purpose, and my intentions on carrying out my plans to be beyond impactful. My mother and sisters are always a listening ear when I need to pick someone’s brain or am overthinking an idea and need a “consumer’s response.” I appreciate their consistency. The community Aisha Ojha of “Mandala Dance Center” for the space to teach my classes in person Wednesdays at 10am and Saturdays at 8am. My yoga community, within six months of teaching full time I am most grateful in how much more growth occurred and that I am able to increase ways to connect with others in my field. I have developed a sense of community amongst various yogis, who are all amazing instructors. Each with their own unique teaching style. We all grow from one another whether its through a yoga class, a business opportunity, or just an empowering conversation. You can tell that Adrianne Geter of “Adrianne 1111”, Alpa Arora of “Good For All Yoga”, Arlington Yoga Center Staff, Cindy Newton of “Chica Power Fitness”, Fit Factory Colleyville Staff are all passionate about empowering the lives they through through physical health.
