Meet Kayla Thomas | Mother, Data Scientist, and a business owner.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
My mug business began with a simple love for collecting mugs. One day after buying a mug from Target, I noticed its design was quite simple and I thought, “I could make this myself.” That moment sparked my curiosity. I dove into researching how to design mugs, and what tools and presses I needed, That’s how my small business was born! Built on creativity, curiosity, and a genuine love for mugs, what began as a personal interest quickly turned into a creative business venture.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a data scientist and small business owner, my career has been shaped by a blend of analytical thinking, creativity, and determination. I’ve always been passionate about problem-solving and using data to drive meaningful decisions, which led me into the world of data science. But I also have a deep creative side that needed space to grow, so I launched my own small business, where I design and sell custom products like mugs, keychains, and gift sets. What sets me apart is my ability to merge logic with artistry: I use my skills as a data scientist to understand customer trends, optimize my operations, and run my business with intention and insight. Getting to where I am today hasn’t been easy. There were long nights and moments where balancing my 9-to-5 job, motherhood, and entrepreneurship felt overwhelming. But I pushed through by staying grounded in my purpose and staying connected to the community that supports me. I’ve learned that success doesn’t come from doing things perfectly, but it comes from starting, adapting, and staying consistent. What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it’s built from heart, hustle, and a belief that creativity and strategy can coexist. Every product I make tells a story, and every chapter of this journey is written with love, resilience, and purpose.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being a native Texan, born in Dallas, I know a few hotspots around my city. I would plan a week-long itinerary that captures the heart and soul of the city through great food, culture, and local charm. We’d start with brunch at Bread Winners Café and spend the day exploring Klyde Warren Park and the Dallas Museum of Art, ending with rooftop cocktails at HG Sply Co. The next day, we’d dive into the creative energy of Deep Ellum, enjoying street art, local shops, and live music. Day three would be all about southern charm, with breakfast at Maple Leaf Diner and a trip to the Bishop Arts District for boutique shopping, followed by some of the best barbecue in town at Pecan Lodge. On the fourth day, we’d explore Dallas’ history at The Sixth Floor Museum, visit the Dallas World Aquarium, and enjoy dinner in Trinity Groves with views of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. A day trip to Fort Worth would follow, where we’d visit the Stockyards, watch a cattle drive, and have lunch at the iconic Joe T. Garcia’s. The sixth day would be more relaxed with a visit to White Rock Lake and the Dallas Arboretum, ending with dinner and wine at Sixty Vines. We’d wrap up the trip on the seventh day with a stroll through the Dallas Farmers Market, grabbing brunch and soaking in the last moments of the visit. This itinerary would give my friend a full picture of what makes Dallas such a fun, vibrant, and welcoming place to explore.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shoutout to my biggest supporters—my mom, and my close friends. From day one, they’ve believed in me, offered their time, ideas, and honest feedback, and cheered me on through every stage of this journey. A huge thank you also goes to the small business community on Instagram and TikTok. Seeing other creators share their wins and struggles helped me stay motivated and reminded me I wasn’t alone. This business is rooted in their love, support, and inspiration, and I’m beyond grateful.
