We had the good fortune of connecting with Katrina “The Hurricane” Harvey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katrina “The Hurricane”, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Actually, the thought process for coming up with 7 Figure Girls, came from me doing my first pageant. In 2016, I held the title of Ms. Plano Plus America 2017 in the Ms. Texas Plus America Pageant and in pageantry you need a platform and at the time I was mentoring young women around DFW. My best friend and I were chatting about my platform and finance one and about potentially making 7 figure salaries, like one day we’ll be 7 Figure Girls. Further in the conversation we started to talk about the 7 attributes that would make a well rounded woman through mentoring and it connected for me. 7 Figure Girls refers to empowerment of young women through the pillars of faith, finance, growth, goals, glow (up), glamour, and generosity. I want to mentor young women to better understand the expectations that the world has for them and that they have on themselves, that it can be overwhelming. I just want to make their transition into the different levels of womanhood easier and for them to be better prepared for the road ahead. I continue to mentor and am proud to be a board member for the D.I.V.A.S. Build Futures Inc, which is a great organization created and led my A’sha Scott to assist, educate, and encourage young women. Plus Size Pageantry has been such a growing experience that has given me such confidence and an appreciation for true sisterhood. Its also part of the reason behind why I created the podcast which focuses on pageantry and finance. As Ms. Texas All World Beauties Plus 2020-2021, I have the platform of Financial Literacy. I chose this platform because it touches everyone on this planet, its important to everyone, and its still such a large discrepancy gap in the socioeconomical classes that needs to closed. My platform is about educating the youth through opportunities such as Junior Achievement of Dallas, through being a group coach in budgeting classes through One Community Church, sharing information on Instagram and Facebook, or sharing amongst friends and family. I’m educating to change generational cycles (curses)to building generational wealth. I eventually want to turn this into a non-profit, yet for now, its starting as a podcast. Soon it will grow into merchandising, consulting, and online development. Yet the foundation of it all is to educate women to mature within the seven pillars of 7 Figure Girls.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a Bachelors Degree in English from Illinois State University and a MBA in Information Technology Management from Capella University. I’ve always had a passion for education as I wanted to be an African-American Studies professor, yet I found my niche working in corporate america. I’ve worked for a Fortune 50 company for 17 years and 15 years of that being in Learning and Development. My career has been very fulfilling because as a facilitator and learning professional, I have a direct impact on the leadership in the company. The examples and techniques I use, the connections I make, have such a long lasting effect that trickles down to all the employees. This is why I have deemed myself a developer of people. I love to assist in someone reaching their potential that they didn’t know they could. The fact that I’m a people person and I connect with others easily is a trait I appreciate about myself. It allows me to really enjoy assisting people with their career, relationship, and self development. I’m proud of the courses I’ve created and careers I’ve touched. Along the way I’ve learned to be very observant of people and how to read a room. These two skills are extremely important, especially in corporate life and the entrepreneur experience. To be able to ebb and flow in both worlds takes learning agility, openness to fail, and optimism. It took years to find my footing in corporate america, yet those three skills have helped tremendously in assisting with finding my seat at the table. I want people to know that my brand is being built around my spirituality, but I’m a down to earth human. My story is that of a young woman with many insecurities blossoming into a confident mature woman that is about maturing other women. I’m here to fix another queen’s crown without letting the world know I fixed it. I’m here for other women to learn, grow, and crown themselves with the knowledge of 7 Figure Girls. I’m also excited to be a newly published author in two anthologies. She is the Ish, Journey to Love and From the Black Perspective: The Blood. This has fulfilled a life long dream of being an author and proves that we all have a voice and a story to share. I’ll have two more books coming out this year and one is based on the pillars of the 7 Figure Girls Podcast. All of these wonderful things happening are a result of being secure in my professional life and branching out to do other things.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh my, were wouldn’t I take them. I absolutely love the Trinity Groves area. We would grab weekend brunch and coffee at Soiree Coffee and then go across the street to grab dessert from the Cake Bar. I would take a day trip to the absolutely gorgeous Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, take a tour of the DeGolyer House and grab a bite at the Restaurant DeGolyer. I would visit the Perot Museum and the African- American Museum. I would see what new exhibits are traveling through town. We would catch a movie at one of the drive-ins in town. I’d try to catch a play at the Fair Park Theater or visit the Canvas Hotel Gallery Rooftop Lounge to view the Dallas skyline. I would also treat them to some fun physical activity like aerial acrobatics, indoor sky diving or hiking a trail. Or take them on one of the many food tours with Dallas by Chocolate and Dallas Bites Food Tours.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course God, my son Kenneth, all of my family, friends, discipleship group through One Community Church and countless supporters. My community is getting bigger all the time. I’d like to shoutout the pageant systems I’ve held titles with, Miss Texas Plus America Pageant and the National All World Beauties and Man of Distinction Pageant. Ryan Cuffee and Ryan Mosley of The Vision Lab Podcast and Brandon Beasley of TrueBlueNation Media for motivating me to start my podcast and mentoring me in the process. Thank you to the community and tribe I’m building around 7 Figure Girls Podcast, you are all appreciated.
