We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Grindstaff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After being in the salon industry for nearly 20 years I wanted to create a space that was a positive, collaborative environment. I saw a need for a salon that was built with the stylists in mind. As an owner that still works behind the chair, I know the challenges they face and hope to help guide them and build them up.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets you apart from others, and what are you most proud of or excited about?
My career as a stylist and business owner has been deeply rooted in my passion for creating beauty and connection. What sets me apart is my dedication to education—not only for myself but for my team. I believe in the power of growth through knowledge, which is why I’ve worked hard to build Moxxi Grey Salon as a space where stylists can elevate their craft and clients can experience the best in hair artistry. I’m most proud of how our salon has become more than just a place for hair—it’s a hub for creativity, teamwork, and building confidence in our clients.
How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Getting to where I am today has been far from easy, but every challenge has shaped me into the leader I am now. Starting as a stylist, I had to build my reputation, learn the ins and outs of the industry, and take risks to grow my business. The hardest part was navigating self-doubt and the fear of failure, especially when opening my salon.
I overcame these challenges by surrounding myself with supportive mentors, focusing on constant self-improvement, and always keeping my “why” at the forefront: to provide a space where people feel valued and cared for. I’ve learned that the journey isn’t about perfection but persistence and adaptability.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
Growth takes courage: You have to be willing to step outside your comfort zone.
Teamwork is everything: Investing in people and relationships is what builds success.
Your mindset matters: How you approach problems determines your ability to overcome them.
Stay true to your values: Success feels empty if you’re not aligned with your principles.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Moxxi Grey Salon is more than a business; it’s a reflection of my belief that beauty begins on the inside. We are a salon that values authenticity, creativity, and empowerment. I want people to know that we’re not just doing hair—we’re building relationships, instilling confidence, and creating a community.
On a personal note, I’m a mother, a creator, and someone who believes in the power of hard work and dedication. My journey has been a testament that with resilience and vision, you can turn challenges into opportunities and create something truly meaningful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Christina Vance, the owner of Rise Collective Wellness in Colleyville, has been such a profound inspiration. As a fellow woman business owner, I deeply admire the empowering space she’s cultivated. Her focus on workouts and meditation offers a much-needed reset for the mind and body—something essential for navigating the stress of running a business. Beyond that, the community of supportive women she’s built is invaluable, fostering growth, collaboration, and encouragement among small business owners. It’s incredible to have someone like her nearby, creating such meaningful connections and opportunities for growth.
