We had the good fortune of connecting with Kandace Walter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kandace, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
I heard this advice from Day 1 but I resisted following it until late in year 4/start of year 5. Delegate. Your business cannot grow without hiring help. It’s important to develop systems and hire staff so that your business can run without you. In addition, when you have staff, they can handle the administrative tasks (phones, emails, calendars, intake, invoices, etc.) so the business owner can focus on working in their area of expertise (law for me). People think that they cannot afford help when in actuality, the business owner cannot afford to not have help. Having a staff person will make the business owner free to focus on the money making tasks for their business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Walter Legal PLLC is a virtual law firm in which the attorney and staff members are all working remotely. For any DFW local clients that want to meet in person, we do have a north Dallas office available for meetings. Otherwise, we handle our business via phone, email, and video calls. Our firm has clients across the DFW metroplex and the United States. Clients can expect to receive high quality legal services at reasonable rates that are not artificially inflated by office overhead expenses. Practically all of our clients are referrals from other lawyers, satisfied clients, former coworkers, friends and family. Attorney Walter has been licensed in Texas since 2004 and registered with the USPTO since 2009 and has extensive experience with trademark and patent applications. She also has extensive experience drafting and reviewing a variety of contracts and agreements to protect her client’s interests. The biggest challenge of her career was changing course from government lawyer (Assistant District Attorney and Assistant City Attorney) and pivoting to Intellectual Property lawyer. Attorney Walter finally found an area of law she is passionate about that combines her love of law, technology, innovations and branding. She enjoys the opportunity to help clients protect their brands and businesses on a daily basis.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I offer to take them for the best soul food in DFW, Drew’s Place in Fort Worth, where I will order fried chicken, catfish, macaroni and cheese, greens and peach cobbler a la mode. Tell Aunt Stephanie and Uncle Drew that Kandace sent you! If we’re near downtown, then I take visitors to Dealey Plaza so they can see the scene for themselves. I will also show them the murals in Deep Ellum and Fair Park, where we may catch a show with Dallas Summer Musicals. If we want catfish and we are close to downtown Dallas, then we will stop by Whiskers for a catfish basket (best seasoning and tartar sauce) or Baby Back Shak for a Shak Platter or a stuffed potato (eat half now and the other half for dinner). We will also have to see if there is music or an event in Klyde Warren. My favorite outskirts BBQ joint is Hutchins. They have the most delectable and tender brisket and ribs and an amazing broccoli salad. If the weather is nice, we will either have a workout or game with Dallas Gaelic Athletic Association. My friends will be amazed and instantly google to find out if they have GAA in their home city. If we decide to stay close to home, then we will have dinner at Fish & Tails and then go to The Line Bar & Grill for drinks and karaoke. I love supporting local, family-owned businesses! If we want to bar hop, then we will head up to the Legacy area. If we want to boot scoot, then we will have to go back to Fort Worth.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Every solo lawyer who started their firm before I started mine. After 11 years of practice, I began to see that the pathway to my happiness as a lawyer was going to be as a solo attorney. However, fear stopped me from hanging a shingle in the past. I met with at least a dozen solo lawyers with various years of solo experience and legal experience. They answered all of my questions and many that I did not know I had. They also encouraged me to be confident and pursue my dreams. These lawyers also shared their practical tips about marketing, office set up, case management software, referral sources, and networking opportunities. One of them also suggested that I read The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss. I’m not there yet but that is still my goal! I remember reading this on my lunch break while still working for a firm and fantasizing about controlling my own career, clients, and financial destiny.
