We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaelyn Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaelyn, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Consistency is E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G!

It plays such a big part in building a business, I could give a speech on
it. There are so many facets to having a business and each one requires
you to be consistent if you want to be successful. I have learned my
strengths and areas of obstacles for building a business especially
because I do everything from creating my own product formulas,
researching ingredients, bottling, packaging, shipping/delivering, and
marketing just to name a few. You also must create relative and
trending content for social media to reach your target audience. (A
moment of transparency), I could probably post more about my
business and products on social media but it’s challenging ‘for me’ since
I struggle balancing being a mom to my beautiful 2-year-old daughter, a
full-time healthcare worker, and business owner. Often, it’s hard just
finding the time or even coming up with creative content. That’s the
part that no one ever really talks about as a business owner. We have
lives outside of our business so being consistent with classes, studying,
making product, researching the best vendors for inventory, posting on
all social media platforms, and now for me, I’m rebranding my business
is that part of on my GRIND mindset you gotta have to be successful. I
can’t even count the number of times I said I would just give up
because I don’t know how I’m going to keep making it work. The
pressure can be overwhelming. The upside to all of this is that I know
my strength is learning so even though I may not post on social media,
I’m still learning what I should and should not do. To provide the best
quality ingredients for my products, I’ve gotten back into dermatology.
I love everything about dermatology because I learn more about skin. I
whole heartedly put everything into making sure the quality of my
products is the best, my presentation is like no other and most
importantly, I provide you with the best customer experience I can give.

I have been rebranding my business name from “The Brat Life Beauty
Bar” to “SKNMISTRY” and have challenged myself to post 80 times on
social media platforms by August 27, 2022, which is my official relaunch
date. I am holding myself accountable with being more consistent so I
can take my brand to the next level – where I belong.

I want to thank you for this opportunity, and I hope me being
transparent will give them the whole picture of being a business owner
but also inspire them to never doubt themselves, take that leap of faith
and stay consistent until you see you dreams thrive.

Be BLESSED,
Kaelyn Brooks

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What goes on behind my business scenes is what sets me apart from most. I pray over myself and my products before I start working on anything so I can work in the right head space to create the best product(s) for you. I chose to package my lip glosses in tubes with LED lights and mirrors because #1 it’s practical and necessary for all ladies and #2, it’s not something you won’t see everyone has – it makes YOU stand out from the rest.

I mentioned earlier how I am going through a business rebranding that I am super excited about because SKNMISTRY now has a more luxurious look and feel to it, and I am now expanding my line to be inclusive for all skin tones and types. I had to go through a trial-and-error phase (I like to think of it as a learning phase) to find the right look I wanted for my business. When I first launched my business on Mother’s Day 2021, I had life’s chaos happening just a few days before, so I thought about putting my business on hold but by the grace of God and my support team, I took that leap of faith on us – me and God.

Having my own business is no walk in the park but it’s also not the toughest – I can say that it has pushed me out of my comfort zone which is scary for me
sometimes. I am very transparent about the challenges I’ve faced since starting
my small business. For me, it’s finding the right balance between business and
personal life. When you feel like you have no time or energy left to put into your
business, you must make time and pull energy from wherever you can to get it
done. Issa Rae said it best, Entrepreneurship means doing E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. by
yourself and I didn’t realize how consuming it would be, but I believe in my
products, so I keep going!

In my previous interview with Voyage, I gave some insight on how I started my
business as a freshman in high school only wanting to do makeup to look older.
Makeup became my focus after getting so many compliments on the look I did on students as well as myself. Looking back on those pictures now, I can laugh at myself because I notice all the techniques were just wrong, and the looks were terrible. Make up became a steppingstone into other facets of my business I thought I wanted to include but quickly realized that acrylic nails and nail art was more of a fun hobby than a real passion. Now, after many attempts of trying to include a lot of other “things” in my business, it’s clear that skin care and beauty is the core of what I everyone to experience through my brand.

I love what I do and will continue to learn so I can provide the best product to
each and every one that chooses SKNMISTRY.

I will reach my goal and #1 dream of having a successful skin care business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am such a free spirit, there wouldn’t be an itinerary. I do enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends so most of the things we do are try to cook new things or try new places to eat or be able to hang out. We would go to a hookah lounge like cafe 214 in Addison. I went for my birthday and had the time of my life – not to mention the their oxtails are amazing! Karaoke at gators is definitely a must! Brunch at Mattito’s, Lunch at Red Claw, Ojeda’s, City View Tacos, Hanabi Ramen, 54th street, L.A Burger, I love Pho( in Irving), Nate’s or cook myself. For the night out we would go out to Deep Ellum , miniature golf, top golf, laser tag, bowling, skating hang out inside and play games, go to a cigar lounge.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to first give credit to God, without him nothing I do would be possible. I have too many people to name individually but I want MY people, the people who have come in my life and have supported me, showed up to help, poured or invested into my business, encouraged me, gave me a listening ear and accepted me for who I was and the dream I have for my brand , for anyone who has been here with me on this journey and has not given up. This shout out is for you. I am grateful and appreciative for it all and it doesn’t go unnoticed. I love ya’ll forever. Thank you to my customers for their undying loyalty and patience, all of you are the real MVP’s, but I would like to thank myself as well. For all the hard work, the time and effort I’ve put in and for getting back up every time I wanted to give up. I am honored to have such a great support system and people who care about me, my goals and dreams.
