We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had a lot of success in my previous career as a personal trainer. I owned a fitness branding agency that taught fitness professionals how to create their influence and brand themselves as credible celebrities online. Although I’d been successful I wasn’t necessarily happy. When I closed the agency I found myself with a lot of time on my hands and I wanted a way to make money, and make others happy, while simultaneously making myself happy.

After I closed the branding agency I found myself in a lull and a little bit depressed. One day I met a friend who was wearing something he’d made using a technique called “wire wrapping”. We talked about the technique for hours and I went home and youtubed everything I could about getting started.

I went out to hobby lobby the next day and the rest is history.

My thought process was simple. Since I’d already come from a high paced environment that wiped me out and I knew that I had control of my future I chose to do something that would keep me fed, smiling, and able to help others.

Now, people use my jewelry to commemorate some of their most special and sacred occasions and that brings me a type of joy that I can’t quite explain. Starting my own business gave me freedom to help others.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I use a method known as “cold fusion wire wrapping” to create one of a kind pieces of jewelry that range from sunglasses to wall art and everything in between. This style of art requires me to manipulate metal wire using pliers to create ornate and intricate designs. I use semi precious and rare stones in my work to help differentiate and set myself apart from others in my industry.

I have a lot of familiarity with knitting. I used to love knitting scarves and hats. I had no idea how similar wire weaving and knitting would be and I credit that background to one of the reasons I was able to pick up wire wrapping with relative ease. I already had a working knowledge of the weaving and wrapping techniques but I had to learn how to do it with wire which was a total challenge within in itself.

I had no idea that there were so many different types of wire, with different strengths, and sizes that had certain functionality. The more I learned and saw the potential for creating different things I was able to start developing and combining different styles to create my own unique looks.

Challenges will always exist but one in particular that I encountered early on was sourcing for genuine gemstones and finding reliable and trust worthy vendors. I’ve definitely been taken advantage of a time or two but I’m learning the best questions to ask and how to identify real / fake gemstones quicker.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Let’s go to Harry HInes! They have lots of great deals on genuine & lab created, gemstones and crystals. I get the best prices on sterling silver, diamonds. geodes, crystals, and raw rocks when I visit the Harry Hines area. You have to take your tax id since most of the shops in the Harry Hines area are setup for business wholesale and won’t let you inside the stores without one.

Harry Hines has some hidden treasures and in my opinion it’s worth a day of exploring. In some cases, I’ve been able to obtain sterling silver findings for half the price listed on amazon or ebay.

Deep Ellum is a must for anyone who enjoys nightlife, shopping, and fun.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom and grandma have stood beside me in times when no one else would and for that, I owe them the world. My grandma gave me the confidence and support to chase my dreams no matter how crazy, outlandish, or unlikely they seemed. She encouraged me to chase my passions head on and never take no for an answer. I know that she’s a major part of the reason I feel free enough to express myself and clearly communicate with others. My grandmother was the warmth in a cold room, chicken noodle soup for the soul, and the embodiment of love. She was my original portrait of a what a diva of her era was. The big hair, big jewelry, big fashion, and big personality. She would definitely be proud of what I’m doing if she were alive today.

My mom is my best supporter. She’s my calm in every storm and without her I wouldn’t be here today. She’s had to be my friend, my therapist, my loan officer, my accountant, my customer, my regulator, and more…. and she does it with a smile and no complaints. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have been able to impact thousands of lives without the help of this one person. I’ve always been a leader and that can often come with big burdens. My mom is literally the only rock I can stand on to catch a break from life’s turbulent and unpredictable waters.
