We had the good fortune of connecting with Juliun Starks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Juliun, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I would say that it’s the fact that I never enjoyed any aspect of the typical 9-5 job. I needed to do something where my mind was engaged creatively. I needed to be in an environment, with others, that allowed me to create something that means something. Photography really has provided me with the exact outlet that I needed. Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a portrait, and wedding, photographer. When shooting, I pride myself on being the proverbial “fly on the wall,” with my main focus being capturing the small, intimate moments that one may not have even really thought about. I started by posting ads on Craigslist saying that I’d shoot for free. It was challenging because of the sheer volume of requests and because I, practically, had no experience photographing anyone other than my family. Through constant repetition, I’ve learned what genres I prefer to shoot and the type of client that I really gel with. I think that, that is one of the most important things that a creative can learn. So much so, that I’ve made it one of my mantras/goals. I want to continue to create, and capture, incredible moments, and stories, with incredible people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite places to go are the following: The National Videogame Museum, Klyde Warren Park (and most of Downtown Dallas in all honesty), Fair Park, The Gallery Rooftop Lounge, and Bishop Cidercade (a must go!). The best thing about the DFW area is how much there is to do. I’m sure there’s lots of places that I’m not thinking of right now that I’ll regret leaving off the list later!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want two shout out two people who have helped me grow and develop, no pun intended, immensely – Jeremy Sharp (https://www.jeremysharppictures.com/) and Ashely Nash (https://abnphotography.zenfolio.com/). Both of them have taught me valuable lessons in how to go about managing a shoot, attracting clients, and even helped me shake the initial nerves by letting me take part in various shoots as a second shooter. I wouldn’t be where I am now without their help!
