We had the good fortune of connecting with Jude Bischoff and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jude, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Quality of life celebrating with loved ones and friends has always been the driving force in my life. I once cashed in my retirement IRA to go Mountain Biking in Moab, Utah. As a Realtor for 20 years my work life was always balanced with 6 to 10 weeks off per year. Family vacations, climbing and adventure trips brought clarity of mind. They were not considered vacations, they are part of a lifestyle I chose for myself. I work hard and play hard. This balance gives me focus to maximize my potential for business. My partner Molly and I were among the top selling Realtors in our area.

For the past 14 years I have worked as as a full time artist. My wife and I travel throughout the west. I work on paintings and follow the Art Gypsy lifestyle traveling from Art Festival to Art Festival. Nature swims through my paintings like a fat bellied fish in a mountain stream. Experiencing and visualizing rhythms and energy in the landscape brings my work to a higher level. Between shows we seek out beautiful trails, camp sites and interesting people. My work is large oil paintings on canvas. All landscapes are started on site so as to capture the rhythm and energy of the landscape. Many times I will first do an outline of a rider or wild animal People viewing the work will be surprised when a bear suddenly appears out of the landscape. The bear and landscape are one.

Every day is a blessing to me as an artist. I can’t wait to get out to the studio or on site in a beautiful natural setting. Stream paintings excite me as I use a linear quality to follow the surface tension of the surface of the flowing water.

I have never experienced artists block. I have so many ideas just waiting for an opportunity to show up. Several years ago I completed a painting called Free. I thought about this image for 20 years before I met the model, Nic, on a climbing trip. She had long flowing dreadlocks and I painted her running through the clouds with Blue Birds flying out of her dress. The piece is 4 x 5 ft and it is a piece I am very proud of.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. I have spent a good bit of time in Dallas doing the Deep Ellum Art Festival among others. The Nasher Sculpture Museum is stunning and one of my favorites. Lee Harvey’s is a cool bar and gathering place with fire pits and a camping atmosphere in the heart of Dallas.

In California Lake Tahoe is easily accessible from where we live. One look at that lake and your heart will melt with happiness.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shirley Sanders, my high school art teacher, was like a mother to me. She brought to me a world of possibility and creativity. A great art program in the schools teaches kids to think outside the box. Shirley did that for me.
