We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Bell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always wanted to work for myself, and I’m a HUGE candle lover. One day I noticed that I was getting headaches after burning certain candles and I was curious to know what was in the chemical make up of the candles, and what I found prompted me to learn how to make my own!

I’ve been a creative and funny person, so when I was creating my brand concept (Petty Candle Co) I knew I wanted my candles to be sustainable, clean burning, and cruelty free and something that I would have fun creating!

What should our readers know about your business?
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and have had several small hustles but never took them seriously. My love of candles and desire to have a safer product in my home kick-started the idea to make my own candle line.

I think the thing that sets me apart is that I offer a high-quality product that doesn’t take itself too serious! One of my goals was to make candles that not only smell great, but bring a smile to your face when you see it, and I think I’ve achieved that!

I’m a one-woman show so It’s not easy running a business and there are days that I question if I have what it takes to maintain a successful business. But the awesome feedback I get from my customers keeps me motivated.

My biggest accomplishment in this journey thus far has been being featured in both Glamour and Cosmopolitan magazines!

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to let the fear and the doubt go, you cannot be afraid of failure and learning how to adjust and grow is a crucial part of any journey. I have failed many times along the way but I haven’t let that hinder my progress.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m an animal lover so we would absolutely visit the Fort Worth Zoo or the Aquarium, then grab a bite to eat at Taco La Banqueta.

Next we would venture on down to Deep Ellum and check out an art fair or the mimosa walk, we could also hit a day party at STIRR or come back later that night for a rooftop vibe at Harlowe.

If they’re into culture and history we would definitely visit a museum downtown, or check out the modern art museum in Fort Worth. The arboretum would also make for a nice relaxing activity.

If they’re thrill seekers or sports fan we definitely can’t forget 6 flags, or AT&T stadium.

To wrap up the week I would probably take them to a nice dinner at Komodo or The Mexican.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner Ryan & best friend Aneva definitely deserve credit!

Ryan has been an integral part of my journey thus far; he has encouraged me every step of the way helped me to make candles, develop new scents, package orders, made post office runs and has accompanied me to countless events to showcase my candles.

My best friend has been my unofficial scent tester and had to endure and kindly critique the very first candle scent I ever created…it smelled like a ham sandwich.
