We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua McDowell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Born to home furnishing industry veterans, I am originally from southern Missouri, I have lived in Branson (the country music show capital of the world) and then Springfield, until I was 11 years old. We then moved to Miami, total culture shock, but enlightening to learn about other cultures and dreams beyond the farms of Missouri. My dad and mom were the creative types, always an art project or a factory producing art, furniture accessories and lighting. This has a big influence on my desire to contribute to making spaces more beautiful. Spending a large percentage of my career in manufacturing lead me to the project management aspect of my current job in construction. My grandparents too were always an influence, my paternal grandma is Japanese and she is very particular and determined, my grandpa having served in the military and being an entrepreneur himself, always thinking business and very direct. My maternal grandma, being in-tune with people and an entrepreneur herself taught me to always learn and my grandpa being a real-estate developer always piqued my interest in construction. All of the positions I have ever held in a multitude of career facets and different departments from manufacturing to sales, service, accounting, HR, and so on prepared me for my own company.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets me and my company apart I believe is our true dedication to our staff first and our customers second. Our staff knows we have their back so they have the empowerment to always do the right thing for our customers. Content employees work harder and smarter. We will always do the right thing for our customers, our staff, our suppliers and our subcontractors because without the team we cannot deliver excellence. As an example we pay our subcontractors before we are paid, it’s risky for us, but it garners us loyalty, responsiveness and performance like no other. We also will guide the customer no matter how uncomfortable the problem or issue to a full resolution. Construction is not perfect, plans are not perfect but my philosophy is “as one cohesive team excellence becomes reality”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to town, I would love to show off Dallas. We are a city with a lot of amenities and things to do. I like all the touristy things like the Kennedy tour so we would definitely do that. I would show him all the architecture and historic places that I love. Thanksgiving Park is always a go to for me, its serene right in the middle of downtown. Of course we would go on an eating tour, Dallas has some of the best food in the country, from hole in the wall places to fine dining. I live close to the Arboretum so that is always a nice time and from there perhaps we would visit the Dallas Museum of Art or the Nasher Sculpture Center, then perhaps to the Dallas Aquarium or the Perot. Then a trip to Bishop Arts district and Deep Ellum both great places in town with unique eating and shopping. Dallas is such a great city to be in and explore, always something new and fun to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All about the shoutout. I owe so many people a shoutout, everyone has lead me to where I am. The good the bad and the ugly. I always say every job I have left for one reason or another has lead me to the next. The skills I have learned pushed me to the next level. In my current career my business partner Laurie Dodic has always been by my side. What scares her does not scare me and vice versa. She is the absolute compliment to me in every aspect of business, we always agree even though we approach everything from a differing point of view. Laurie and I have worked together for the last 4 careers we have had, always following each other and taking each other along for the ride. I owe my current success to her joining me in the big step of starting our own and supporting me along the way.
