We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna Nino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johanna, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Deciding to be fearless. Its hard to be successful when your afraid to be successful. You must allow yourself to fail and learn from your mistakes and use them as opportunity for growth and development. You keep going no matter how hard it gets. You invest in yourself, stay disciplined and focused even when you feel like you made it. Don’t get comfortable, Stay hungry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ever since I was a little girl I loved creating things. Whether it was cutting up my Barbie’s clothes to make something new out of it or bugging my cousin to help me recreate some cookies I’ve seen on tv. I went through so many different stages in my life. From creating custom party décor and apparel to doing some photography and being a hairstylist for a long period of time. All while having a day job and a family my hands were always busy! But I enjoyed every bit of it. Creativity comes naturally to me, picking up my first bench scraper at 10 yrs old, I took my first cake decorating class at Michaels Craft Store. Here is where my love for designing cakes grew. Although this journey didn’t began till 3 yrs ago the ambition has always been there.
Of course it had its many challenges along the way. Entrepreneurship isn’t always pretty, but it takes a different type of passion to love it like any other hobby would. There is no set schedule, your working around the clock. But with all that hard work and sacrifice eventually you learn to balance your personal time with your business
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come through all my ventures. It has given me the confidence to keep growing and bringing it to a bigger platform. Just stay tune for what’s to come from Sweetener Cakery!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First and foremost the Reunion Tower! It’s a must to get that 360 view of our beautiful skyline. We’ll catch a ride on the Trolly in the Uptown Area. Stop by and enjoy some brunch with mimosas at some of Dallas finest cuisines. Take a stroll downtown, and get tickets to a concert at American Airlines. Even catch a football game at Cowboys Stadium. Dallas has so many iconic places to visit. Its definitely a beautiful city to see.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Family, my biggest supporters that are always behind me cheering me on. Specifically my Mother, she is one of the strongest woman I know and after my father passed, she didn’t let any obstacle get in her way to provide for her family. The resilience in her is something I always admired. I just hope to be as great as a mother as she is for us. But without a doubt I wouldn’t be where I am today without my husband. He has given me his time, advice and total freedom to fly and pursue my dreams.Through all the struggles in this journey he reminds me to accept that as the fuel I need to grow and prosper in this business. After any breakdowns or challenges I’ve come across he’s always there to help me find a solution and keep my head straight. His motivation and positive energy gives me the confidence to become a better version of myself. To my best friend Mirsha, for always encouraging my creative ventures. Believing in me and always showing up. Lastly, a big shout out to my community. I’ve come this far through every referral, share, and support I’ve received from them. Sweetener Cakery is what it is today because of you!
