We had the good fortune of connecting with Joel Fisher and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Um, I have a business? JK! Honestly, my print shop is just getting started, and since I have like seven followers there hasn’t been much traffic on it yet. It may be a while until I have a standalone website, and that’s okay. I am not convinced that it would be worth the expense to create, not to mention the time it would require to keep the site current.

It seems as though www.joelkfisher.com will just have to wait.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My background has considerable variety. For the last several years, I have worked as an instructional technologist in a highly diverse public school district near Dallas, TX. In this capacity, I work to help teachers improve their teaching and students to better their learning. I’m a happy husband to my beautiful wife and an adoring father to two amazing kids, a boy and a girl ages 11 and 9.

We all see lots of flowery descriptions of this or that art photography project or series. Most of them are difficult to parse, frankly, often striking me as not evocative or, even in some cases, confusing. Some of them come off as downright pretentious. I’ll spare you.

Art is everywhere and inside everyone. It definitely resides within all children. That child-like sense of wonder. That fearless courage to create and make. What is failure to a young child? Anyway, I got back into photography with fervor just before lockdown, at the start of 2020. I have always been drawn to and seek inspiration from many sources and forms. I give myself the freedom to shoot whatever catches my eye. Sometimes a scene beats me over the head, which is an absolutely thrilling experience. Other times a shot may reveal itself slowly or often not at all. I love details, shadows, liminality, and all things atmospheric mood and ethereal nature. I have learned that if I can make myself feel certain emotions with my photos, I can prompt some others to feel similar emotions as well. Which, when you boil it down, is the ultimate goal of all fine art photography.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s a lot to do and enjoy in Plano and the entire Metroplex area. Night one I might take them shopping and to dinner at Legacy, and then book a suite at the Omni Hotel in Frisco’s Star District. Downtown Plano is a cute, vibrant little hub. The pizza and calzones at Urban Crust taste great on its roof-top patio, and Vickery Park just across the street is a top-notch neighborhood pub worthy of hoisting a pint or two.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thank you to my friends and family for their love and support.
