We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Yow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my own business stems from my passion to help the next generation succeed and thrive in today’s world. We have so many of our youth going in the wrong direction with no one to really talk to them about emotional intelligence. There is a dire need for our youth to be taught how to express their emotions and how to appropriately cope with those feelings. Understanding this need, I realized I had to forge ahead and be a catalyst for support for the youth. That is what fueled me to create YPIC.
YPIC’s mission statement sums up my purpose for starting the organization. YPIC’s mission statement is, “To be advocates for action and positive redirection, to foster strong relationships, and to increase social emotional and physical health with youth.”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
1. Please tell us more about your career.
I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from Paul Quinn College. I furthered my education in counseling with a master’s in biblical counseling. I have been in the education field 15 years. As an educator, I always played a role in mentoring and supporting all my students, not just academically, but also socially. My time as an educator allowed me to see the major need for a program like the one, I created.
2, We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about.
I believe what sets me apart is being able to understand, reach and build relationship with the next generation to promote change. I am extremely excited about Youth Positive Impact Coaching and the amazing things this organization will accomplish in the lives of the those it will serve.
3. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?I took a leap of faith to be where I am professionally. It was not easy to arrive here; and this path, I do not expect it will get easier right away. Someone once said, “What comes easy, will not always last. And what will last, will not always come easy.” To overcome challenges, I realized I must keep pushing and lean on God for direction.
4. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
I’m learning that you cannot expect another person to see your dream or vision the way you do. What I am doing and working towards is a vision God gave me; I had to learn that He did not give my vision to others. At times things I set out to do may seem impossible or crazy to others, but I know this is my God-given path. Another lesson I learned is to let others assist. I am so grateful for the support I am blessed to lean on as I travel my path to accomplishing my goals.
5. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I want the world to know that I have been impacting the community by advocating and teaching youth through mentoring and social emotional learning for a long time now. Youth Positive Impact Coaching was established to provide children an environment in which they can reach their fullest potential. Youth Positive Impact Coaching is a life-affirming journey that builds on the richness and power of lifelong values through behavioral health. YPIC is how I am meant to do my part on earth to leave it better than I found it. This is my legacy.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many! But here is a list of a few of my main supporters: my beautiful wife, Erika Yow, my children: Jo’Nathan; Elijah; Joelle; and Jo’Nesia. They are my reason for pushing hard every day. All my siblings have also played an important role in my life. One of the reasons I am where I am now is because of my brother, Elder Ronnie Miller-Yow. In one of the most crucial times in my life, Elder Ronnie Miller-Yow encouraged and insisted that I go to college. His advice and support changed my life forever.
