We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessika Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessika, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I will say it does seem easier to throw in the towel from time to time. However, when I do feel like giving up I look back on how much progress I’ve made within my business and skillset. I actually have a job I enjoy and I can say confidently I put myself in this position. It’s a good feeling to know that I achieved my goal of owning my own business and doing what I love. The other goals I set for myself keep me motivated to push forward. There’s always so much more to learn and focus on that the thought of giving up just seems unthinkable.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art consists of capturing emotions and moments that will be cherished for years to come. Of course, there are poses to be photographed but it’s the candid moments I capture that I am most proud of, the story that is told within one image. I got where I am today by growing and investing in myself and my skills. I took a chance and became vulnerable to the world when I first started my business. I knew I had a lot of learning to do but I stayed humble and reached for the goals I set. “Everyone starts somewhere” I’d always tell myself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had to take a friend to my favorite spots around Dallas, I would definitely take them to Texas Live in Arlington. We’d eat and drink and walk around the area. Texas Live is a spot you can’t find anywhere else in the metroplex. But I do currently live in Denton, so of course we’d take a visit to the Denton Square and maybe have a picnic by the courthouse where it’s quiet and peaceful. Now, I really wish COVID wasnt a thing- and I’d be sure we’d go to a concert or two.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I really want to thank my mom for pushing me to get a job at a photography studio when I was 16. I remember debating with her on why I shouldn’t work there. When in reality I was just not confident in my skills at the time. Of course. I don’t think I would be in the position I am in my life right now if it wasn’t for her pushing me to be apart of something I’ve always had a passion for.
