We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Payes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I wouldn’t say it’s my career, but it is definitely something I am passionate about. I’ve been writing poetry for a very long time as a way of healing, processing, and coping. It became a way of life for me, only, I never thought I’d share it with the world. My words have helped me through so many difficult moments where I wish I had someone guiding me. So I turned my story into poetry and published a book so I can be that guide for as many people as I can be.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So, I am a case worker who works with families of children diagnosed with a mental illness. I absolutely love my job and what I do. I have my bachelors in social work and hope one day I could work in the same middle school I attended. The job itself it fairly easy, of course it has its moments where it’s difficult or stressful but I wouldn’t change what I do. What was difficult for me was college. I actually recently dropped out of college in the middle of the semester working on my master’s degree. I woke up one day, and decided I didn’t want to do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore…so I quit. I want others who read my poetry book to understand their happiness is not limited, their opportunities are endless, and that they are resilient. Most of all, that they are stronger than their pain.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I feel like so many times we shout out others and include everyone but ourselves. Shout out to me, for being alive long enough to share my stories with others. Shout out to me for choosing the greatest support system anyone could ask for.
