We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Jacob and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I graduated from college, I expected to be a high earner and expected a career to come easily to me and that’s not what happened. I didn’t know anything about networking; I didn’t know anything about internships and part of this may have been what I wasn’t taught, but the other part would definitely be that I didn’t know what I didn’t know.. I graduated in 2009 and I asked God to show me how to make a living whether or not I could get hired. The hustler in me was born that day and the career that I now have I think also started that day. I begin to learn how to earn creatively and realistically from home, but then I also kept getting people hired as I also got hired. I was obsessed with this life that combined financial freedom and career satisfaction. Now that I am a fully remote professional where both my business’ Mrs. Fine Print’s Independent Recruiting and my Corporate work in healthcare staffing work in hand, and plain old me can start a savings challenge in my private group because money still matters, and my women’s group can raise funds to help a sister in Christ….where my HR background and who I am with no title come together….I have a have a long way to go and have come a long way. I’m blessed to be here even when it’s tough doing what I do and being patient.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Mrs. Fine Print LLC, and I also DBA as my personal name, Jessica M. Jacob, I am both an HR Consultant (I’m certified in human resources, and I spent the bulk of my career working in HR focused positions), I work in Independent Recruiting, which means I source for people that are right fit for positions that I have connections to, and I also work corporately in healthcare staffing, preparing graduates, final employment in their desired career field. I tend to always say that either I have the direct lead to a job, I know the person who has a job you want, or I probably have seen it even if I don’t have a connection. I see hundreds and thousands of jobs all day and I want to see them because I see them for the candidates.

I think on the surface level, I’m not in neatly different than other recruiters or HR professional. I do think the way my brain works helps, but even though I never set out to do this with my life, the closer I got to Christ the more clear this path became right for me. So His divine will for my career is heavily at work in what I do and I’m here because I was meant to be. Whether I have a deep connection with a candidate or it’s just a passing moment that leads to hire, or it’s advocating for a pregnant mom who doesn’t know if she can still find a job or it’s an immigrant who is trying to make a life for themselves as a US citizen, it doesn’t matter.: I pray to be a blessing to every single person whether that relationship is short or long-term. I will do my best to find the right opportunity for you until the Lord takes me home. Plus, doing what I do is easy because every single human being is probably going to be my customer for the rest of my life. Everybody is trying to take care of themselves and earn a living one way or the other. I can’t run out of customers.

I wouldn’t call the work that I do easy, but I do think people can be built for it or have the right set of internal characteristics for this. Independent Recruiting takes time, patience and diligence and I’m still learning how to be better at it and what’s keeping me going is my love for finding people the right opportunities. Corporate staffing, or recruiting is a lot easier because the brand of the organization usually has the marketing established inside their size and network:. Self motivation, and self discipline is crucial, and you can make no money or a lot of money. In terms of operational cost, thankfully it’s been very low. As long as I have Internet and his cell phone, I can do what I do which I think is amazing. However, I do try to keep a laptop and a dedicated working space when it’s necessary. I’m always wanting to hire somebody to work for me. ChatGPT is helping to be a Recruiting Coordinator for me right now, but if God says the same, I definitely want to hire a Recruiting Coordinator and an Executive Assistant very soon.

The lessons I’ve learned can be simplified into a few statements: Keep God first, never be the smartest person in the room, and listen more than you speak.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Everybody who knows me knows I love food so we’re going to a northern Indian and a southern Indian restaurant in a heartbeat. We’re going to Irving for Kabab and Curry, then we’re probably going downtown to a Mediterranean spot called Baboush. We’re going to the spa such as that outdoor new spa, but I can’t think of the name and maybe King spa and spending like 6 to 10 hours there, and we’re probably getting a massage at Elemnets Massage with some of my favorite therapists. We have a full tank of gas because this is Texas and we have the whole day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ll always blame the Bible. It’s my daily bread; it lives in me and I live from it.
My mentors and friends, colleagues and brethren: Rosalind Booker of Arbrook Realty, Urban Brown, Senior Pastor of Life in Christ International, my close friends Leticia of McCullar Family Ministries, Inc, Kenisha of Royal Appetit and BBA, Aisha of Virtual Elite Solutions, Kavi, my soul sister and friend, Black in HR for being THE TABLE for black HR professionals; my mother and sisters, my in laws and the many souls and faces who trust me even if they don’t know it’s because of Christ, and finally my husband who challenges me in more ways than I often want to be challenged, my kids who are blessings I never knew I needed….I can go on and on. I didn’t get here on my own. I thank all of these and many more.
