Meet Jen Sulak | Photographer & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Sulak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
At the time I began my business, I didn’t even know Photography would have been an option for me. I took a year-long business course that helped me understand the depths of actually HAVING one and then RUNNING one. Come to find out, the making pictures was the easiest part of it all! After being laid off from my job (many jobs) of data entry and hiding behind a desk – i took a leap that felt like it fit where I was able to take & make images with a camera using ANY subject I wanted. It was an awakening to my creative side that I had so very much needed for years. I was also fortunate at the time to have input from other small business owners that helped it all make sense as I navigated my own path through this vast field. So thought? It was really a thought that led to an action of “Why not me?”.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I became a business a while back, but I was always creative. Whatever medium that was in front of me, I would try it. It didn’t always mean i was good at it or won awards – but i tried it. When Photography hit me – i opened up a whole new world of film & digital arts. I found that I could capture my ideas faster AND have amazing collaborations with my fellow humans. I would have to say that walking out my evolving brand brought me to today. I had to put my heart & soul into artist statements or business mission statements. When I chose to color my hair pink – it was an accidental brand that evolved. I became Pink Light Images after that in order to reach all the people I wanted to work with creatively. What has always set me apart is the willingness and OBSESSIVENESS to be myself. My hopes is that many people that are around me and work with me can BE themselves. I’ve learned that working through your past hindrances can bring you to that greater awareness to your TRUE self, and it should be celebrated. You are welcomed into the Pink Light Images family and I always find ways to celebrate you. Also, being ok with being WEIRD. I’ve had sooo many weird ideas that come to me – and you know what? I just go create them. It is the best feeling to know that I have the freedoms to create my ideas…even if no one ever saw them. Be free, go CREATE!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of my newest favorite spots in Dallas-Fort Worth are these nature parks. There are some spots across this vast city that have amazing pockets of nature that we can enjoy. I would suggest a stop in the downtown area where you can see the buildings and historic sites. I would also suggest taking in some of these crazy amazing eateries. I’m always down for a good burger or BREAKFAST ALL DAY LONG! Check out Norma’s Cafe, Twisted Root Burger and yes, the Waffle House. (some of their employees are so amazing) If you fancy a good Tikka? Bawarchi!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
One of the most pivotal moments of my life in my Photography career was attending the After Dark photography convention. I had been burned out on video education, photography groups and trying to find a spot where I fit in and meshed with a group of people. Little did I know, it would literally change my life – all based on the people I met there and worked with. We all worked together to make this AMAZING experience where we had a little bit of life, a little bit of business and the rest is history. It always felt like a place I could call home. So, to my friends and co-artisans I met at AD: Brian Demint, Brooke Shaden and Dave Junion. Thank you.
