We had the good fortune of connecting with Jemila Medley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jemila, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over the last few months as I’ve expanded my business, I have had to set boundaries in place between my work and my personal life in order to create a healthy balance. Being a business owner can consume you…constantly thinking about new opportunities, how you can make something better, contacting clients, emails, etc. But it is so important to find balance. I still struggle from time to time, however I give myself at least 1 full day a week of absolutely no work & no work on social media. Since most of my work evolves around social marketing, this means, I can still go on social media that day but chose not to post or respond to anything business related, rather I enjoy social media as if I wasn’t using it for my business. I also make sure I take 20-30 min per day to check-in with myself to ensure I am pouring what I need into myself and my family FIRST before pouring into my business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My Pre/Postnatal Business, “Motherhood, Music, & Movement, LLC” is a place for moms to find health & wellness resources. This includes pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and postpartum fitness coaching, education/guidance, custom fitness programs, prenatal programs, postpartum recovery programs, & wellness resources. Ultimately providing moms with the resources to return to doing things they enjoy and maximizing their health and wellness during pregnancy and postpartum. My brand began as I started releasing my own Christian worship music when pregnant with my first child. I realized how much my music was impacting others, and as I became a new mother my passion for helping moms increased. I then transitioned from being a general occupational therapist to a specialized occupational therapist, specializing in pelvic floor therapy. I also chose to expand my fitness training and education by becoming a pre/postnatal coach. It was through my own pregnancy and birthing experience that I found my passion for helping mamas.

Making the transition from working solely for a large corporate hospital, to starting my own pre/postnatal business as an pelvic floor occupational therapist certainly had its challenges (and still does), but the reward is priceless. When you are passionate about what you do, your work just naturally is apart of you and it often times doesn’t even feel like “work.” Being a small business owner, I have learned that you must charge your worth and understand that your time and expertise is VALUABLE. it took me a few months to realize that all the info I was giving out for “free” was extremely valuable and was worth my time and my fees, even for family! It was hard initially to put my foot down and set that standard, but again I had to realize that my time is very valuable.

I want the world to know that Motherhood, Music, & Movement, LLC is about uplifting, encouraging, educating, and advocating for moms through health and wellness resources. I am passionate about serving this population and strive for every pregnant mama I work with to be as prepared for their birth and postpartum phases as possible and have the tools she needs to have success in her recovery and strength.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First stop, Klyde Warren Park and Yard bird restaurant! Next, likely shell shack for some awesome snowcrabs or flower child for a light lunch
We’d definitely venture off to Hopdoddy at some point too
And let’s not forget the art museum, creamistry, cinnaholic, and deep ellum for some cute city pictures!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, without a doubt. He has been extremely encouraging and my backbone throughout this entire venture into starting my own business. Although he does not know the ins and outs of everything I do for my clients, he does know how passionate I am about my career and how I help moms, and he continues to push me to keep going.
