We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeannot Quenson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeannot, what principle do you value most?
Open-mindedness is an important principle to me. I try to apply this way of thinking to both my daily routine, and artistic practice. When approaching a new tool or technique, an open mind can lead to new or unforeseen outcomes. It’s important to set the right tone for creative exploration.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I try to create work that blurs the line between formats and mediums. My recent approach involves visualizing audio as image and vice versa. My preferred method is to capture auditory snapshots with my camera, using a synthesizer and oscilloscope as the source of composition. The result is a synesthetic experience – we’re actually seeing sound.
A passion for both music and visual art led me to this process. I’ve spent the last ten years working with 4ms Company, where we design and manufacture electronic musical instruments. By taking concepts from artists like Steina and Woody Vasulka, and applying modern photo/video technology, I’m able to use a “musical” instrument to create visual images. Adding optical filters between my camera and oscilloscope, I’m able to mark make with a sense of space and variation unavailable to me before.
The ability for commissioned or custom pieces using sound is exciting as well. With the right tools you can transform logos, text, shapes and other symbols into sound, manipulate as audio, then convert back to an image for unique new aesthetics.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many delicious restaurants in the area, and I’d start there with my best friend. We’d go to some favorites like Kuby’s, then check out new and recommended ones. The rest of the time would be spent visiting museums and galleries like the DMA, Nasher, and Rainbow Vomit. A trip to Good Records is also a must! There are so many ways to enjoy the arts in Dallas, we would barely scratch the surface in a week.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been lucky to have supportive friends, family and instructors through the years. They’ve all played a huge role in pushing my work, and encouraging me along the way. Besides my parents, my longtime art mentors Mary Lynn and Jim Bowman of Bowman Glass, are two people that have been instrumental since day one. They took me under their wing, and allowed me to witness firsthand what it takes to be a working artist.
