We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaylynn Shaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaylynn, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Personally, risk taking has played a huge role in my life. Every choice you make, you have to think of the risks and benefits. If you don’t take that risk or step you will never know the outcome. I would rather know something did or didn’t work out rather than wonder if it could’ve work out. I have the same perspective on risk taking in my career without risks there will be no great success. I think in order to make progress and accomplish things you have to take that initial risk and continue to do that.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I do makeup and hair for all occasions. I would say my ability to do different styles of makeup and hair sets me apart from others. I can give you full glam with colors and glitters all day but I can also give you your natural glam for everyday wear. I know a lot of talented makeup artists and we all do things differently. Not one artist is identical in the way they work. I would say I am most excited about the new services and additions I am looking to add to my business. I think adding new services is always fun for me because I get to learn something new and I cam provide my clients with everything they need in one place. I am most proud of my full glam clients, I am always so happy after finishing a really glam look. I always think “I did that??” I love it!! I got where I am today professionally by hard work and dedication. I would not say it has been easy. I really fully entered the industry in the one of the worst times possible. I graduated cosmetology school in November 2019 so shortly after COVID-19 came and knocked everyone down. I overcame those struggles around September 2021 and have been working so hard to build my business since then. There was a point in time I wanted to just go to college for teaching and only do hair and makeup on the side because I didn’t think it was possible for me to go full time MUA/Hair stylist. I did one semester of college and did great but that made me realize that I did not want to pursue something that I wasn’t truly passionate for. I am truly passionate for makeup and hairstyling so I learned not to give up even in the hardest times.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So, I am not really big on going out in the city or really, in general. I have visited some spots that I have really liked though. I think I would definitely take them to a cute photo op type restaurant like XOXO dining hall and we would stay at the longue after hours for drinks. I like to hang out at places that aren’t too crowded and are more lowkey. I love to be active as well so I think maybe going to Top Golf or something similar is a really fun time. I like to also find hole in the wall dive bars to hang out and listen to live music and play pool.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is a few people that come to mind when it comes to my career that I feel like have helped me tremendously. Janet Guzman is one of those people. She took me in to be on her bridal hair and makeup team in 2019 when I freshly out of cosmetology school and trusted me with her clients. I was only doing makeup for 2 years at the time of joining her team. She has always been very encouraging and has taught me so much. She’s an amazing makeup artist, hairstylist and mom to her kids! There are so many others that I have met but I would go all day if I listed them all. Janet is just one of the first people in the industry to really have faith in me.
