We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Robert Villarreal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason Robert, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve done the managament, run restaurants, worked the desk, and I felt stunted.  No one wants to feel stagnante. In a creative career tides are always moving and always changing. It keeps my journey from going stale. When you pour love and creativity into a project it helps me feel that I have purpose. My goal in any creative endeavor is that I can make an individual smile, laugh, cry, just move them in one way or another. It gives me the opportunity to shine a light on something outside of themselves in hopes to help them become better and greater.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
If it’s not a challenge then it’s not as fun! Being a performer, we live in an industry of rejection. You can choose to crumble or overcome; more classes, more shows, more opportunities to perform and more learning experiences. I have learned that the obstacles are the lessons and we have to continue to love and learn. Just recently I have stepped into the world of Drag, and let me tell you about lessons to learn! What make-up works for me and what style of performance fits your motif. Practice doesn’t make perfect, but practice helps you grow and learn.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m all about bar-b-quing in our backyard after visiting the farmers market! We start the day with some mimosas and breakfast in our home. Follow it up by getting our nails done at grand nail bar on oaklawn. Take some bikes around white rock, catch a show at Uptown Players or Theatre Three then hit up Dallas Woodys or The Round-Up Saloon and check out some Drag shows after!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The theatre community in DFW is a melting pot of wonderful, incredible and talented artists. I really feel like a lot of growth is due to a large percentage of the community: Bruce R. Coleman, Jeremy Dumont, Jeff Kinman, Adam C Wright, and Ryan Matthieu Smith. These amazing individuals have taught and mentored me how to be a more honest artist. So to them, thank you for your gifts!
