We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Dove and we’ve shared our conversation with him and his team below.

Hi Jason, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I choose success over failure. When you embrace failure, you’re saying that failing is an inevitable result in your endeavors. Going forward, this mentality then guides your actions—or inactions—which can increase the likelihood of failure. It has an almost cyclical effect.

Your personal brand consists of a basis of values and characteristics that you want to embody and convey. In a competitive world, it is very important that individuals are able to find an edge on their competition. Personal branding allows you to show what matters to YOU. Your brand image becomes about the skills and interests you have and are interested in, not what your job or environment might have dictated. The focus of my life begins at home with family, loved ones and friends.

I want to use my resources to create a secure environment that fosters respect, continuous learning, and mutual success. I will protect and value my integrity. I am mindful of my imperfection and will admit and quickly correct my mistakes. I will always be a self-starter and believe in creating a carrot culture for my employees. I will try to treat others with the same respect I would like to receive and despite my short attention span, I will strive to be a be a good listener with an open mind. I will facilitate and celebrate the success of others.

Take stock of the things that you are truly passionate about and focus on them. Don’t be afraid to have an opinion about what you dislike. But always be respectful of the fact that people are entitled to their opinions and preferences, even if you disagree with them. Never talk down to someone for liking something you dislike. To effectively monetize a business around your personal brand, you must be passionate and show it. Building businesses and achieving success takes a lot of time and hard work. If you don’t have the passion to stick it out, there will be plenty of legitimate reasons to quit along the way to your goal.

Don’t compromise your ideals — rational people who disagree will at least respect you. But always be respectful of other people’s beliefs, too. When people learn more about you on this personal level, they are more likely to be attracted to you and want to do business with you. And the great thing is you accomplish that simply by revealing the true and more complex “you” to the world at large.

By building a personal brand it can show the skills and qualities that someone has, defining what makes them important or different. Identify what gets you up in the morning. What drives you to change the world? Look at every person who has a successful personal brand and you can often immediately identify what drives them.

When you’re present both online and offline with your values and strengths, others can get to know you better, find common ground or discover interesting aspects of your life and work that they want to talk to you about. This is how a relationship is formed without you even really talking to the people.

Integrity is crucial for any leader. With it, leaders avoid confusion and internal conflict. It allows leaders to follow a balanced path, where character and talent work hand in hand. With an aligned moral compass, integrity can aid in building the strong foundation upon which talent can rest.

Overall, “character shows that who you are and who you appear to be are one and the same.” As leaders, we must communicate consistency to our team. With that evenness, we have the opportunity to make a greater impact on those around us. That will ultimately not only strengthen our talent, but also the talent of those we influence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is easy! There is always fun stuff to do in Dallas. Depending on the time of year, we would likely take in a game and cheer on our Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars, Maybe we would channel our inner Ricky Bobby and see some racing at Texas Motor Speedway, We could always enjoy the thrilling rides at Six Flags. We will definitely be eating a meal at Taqueria La Ventana, Nick & Sam’s, Al Biernat’s, Blue Fish, Mama’s Daughter’s Diner and Javier’s. Then we can have some drinks at Katy Trail Ice House, The Rustic, Moxie’s, Parliament, Bowen House and The Loon,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve had a lot of great mentors throughout my career. Over the years, I’ve tried to adopt the things about their leadership styles that I admired, and weed out the qualities I disliked. One of the most important factors in my success has been the unwavering support from my family, especially my wife (Stacy). We have taken some calculated risks by investing and working with multiple start-ups. We have made both investments and earned sweat equity with no money coming in to help put food on the table. Investing in startup companies is a very risky business, but it can be very rewarding if and when the investments do pay off. But as far as I’m concerned, all startups are extremely risky investments, and even though I’m glad to reduce my risk (through due diligence, terms sheet, diversification, etc), at the end of the day people invest because of the potential rewards, hoping to invest in the next unicorn.

It’s also important to take risks while you’re young because every risk you take comes with more experience. Not only will the risk present you with new career opportunities and new perspectives, but a failure will also teach you an important lesson, and a success will open the door to new possibilities.

The most important victory is to conquer self. When give up or let ourselves live in mediocrity, our leadership will never reach its potential. However, being disciplined maximizes our abilities, our character, and in addition to our talent, will help us win the battle within.
