We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Doherty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I found a boutique gym in Philadelphia in a really hard time in my life. I was out of shape and very unhappy. The gym I found was built on teaching me about my health and movement. It’s the first time I was taught and shown what I was capable of physcial and became very empowering. I used it to build back my health and in doing so met a community of people that were all into doing the same thing. It was a transformative experience and I wanted to build a business that could do the same for others.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are a business centered around coaching. We are a teaching gym if you will. Our goal is to teach people how to correctly move in and out of the gym. Train different energy systems and keep strength and conditioning fun and progressive. The high quality coaching you get matches if not exceeds many personal trainers at a fraction of the cost. We create fun, sustainable, transformative change in our members lives while having a great community of like minded people supporting you each step of the way. #smallgymbigheart

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For drinks the vibe at Paschall’s can’t be beat. Small cozy speakeasy vibes with hand crafted cocktails. For a great patio beer list hang Eastside is a local favorite.

For eats Komodo Loco for sushi/fusion and 940’s (american fare) can’t be beat!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My coaching staff has been with me since the beginning. Both Mason and Chloe are going on their 5th and 6th years with me as well as Kristen who is on year 3. The continuity and support these coaches have created allows me to take risks and have more impact on our community. Couldn’t have done it without them and I’ll be forever grateful!

The book that I read that helped me the most as a person and therefore an operator of the business is Carol Dweck’s “Mindset” One of the core takeaways is the growth mindset. Too many times people refer to talent as the key indicator in someone’s capabilities. Dweck lays out the case that all of us have the capability to evolve and grow through experiences and that talent isn’t what we think it is. Great book that keeps you from limiting yourself!
