We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind my business began with my mom. I used to watch both her and my grandmother bake cakes for years. My mother ran her home business, Lorraine Cake Designs, for 30 years. Growing up, I wasn’t interested in baking cakes out of frustration because my icing never would go on smoothly. I just thought “Hey, maybe this is not my talent.”
I went off to college at Middle Tennessee State University and every Sunday I would have my friends over for Sunday dinner because I loved to cook. Many of my friends would say “Jazz, you need your own restaurant.” But that went in one ear and out of another. After returning home from college, my mom said that she was ready to retire and hand her business over to me one last time. By this time, I was ready and Jazzy Cakes was born.
In 2013 I made my first cake by myself without the help of my mom. I started off making cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries only. I began incorporating other treats into my menu and later changed the name to JW Confections & Desserts.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I first moved to Dallas, I was without a job. After a month of being here, I received a position with Reach Media working for the Fantastic Voyage Cruise with Tom Joyner. That job was an amazing opportunity but I decided to transition into the medical field. Currently, I work for Cardinal Health as a Senior Rep. I assist with ordering products for the hospitals and pharmacies.
Getting to where I am now was not easy. Leaving my hometown of Memphis and coming to Dallas without a job and a child developed a new layer of strength in me, It is the reason why I go so hard for my business to make it successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
On a typical weekend, if I had friends in town, we would go to a restaurant called True Kitchen + Kocktails. The atmosphere is impressive. I have been for brunch twice and the lamb chops with lobster are to die for. They have also been known for their peach D’usse drinks that come in a D’usse bottle.
My next spot would be The Common Table, located in Frisco by the Cowboys practice stadium. They have a hip-hop brunch on Saturday and Sunday that plays all of your favorite jams from past to present. Make sure you make a reservation ahead of time, or you won’t be able to get in.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family of course, especially my mom! Besides them I would like to recognize three ladies who pushed me with starting my business right here in DFW. They are Angela, Jada, and Gabby.
It all started with a girls brunch with learning how to budget better and we actually never talked about the budget. My friend Jada said, “Show them the cake you made for your birthday!” and it was up from there.
We brainstormed to come up with a new business name. Then, they helped me set up my DBA and LLC. If it wasn’t for that day, I can honestly say I would not be as far as I am with my business and skill level.
Lastly, I would like to shoutout the person that submitted me for this opportunity, my Marketing Consultant Lauren Keys (@ellevatedconcepts). She has pushed me out of my comfort zone to get my brand on the right track.
