We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

My thought process behind starting my own business consisted of the following: As a high school student braiding boys and girls hair and watching the stylists that did my hair made me realize that this was my calling; to become a Licensed Cosmetologist. The girls were pleased with the beautiful styles that I gave them: Roller set, Silk Press and Braids. After completing the course work at Magnolia College of Cosmetology with license in hand. I started this journey by working in a salon with three seasonal professionals. These ladies had been in the business for ten and twenty years. So, I was nurtured by them. After this training, I began working in Artisan Hair Company Salon. The experience was great. But I wanted to be in my own salon laying the foundation for greater things to come. As I watched my business expand, never taking my eyes off of the “Prize” I decided to move to Texas.

I moved to Lewisville, TX in 2012. I found a salon to work in with 2 other people. It was challenging because I did not have many clients. I decided to use social media more and use different booking sites that people use to find stylists.  My clientele began to grow.  I love doing natural hair whether it is relaxed, braids or weaves. I have put my focus on the health of hair making sure the hair ends are trimmed when needed and deep condition, as well. When clients want to change their style but don’t know what it is that they want. I help them by making suggestions. After I created a style that is close to what the client wanted the finished product is pleasing. I am proud of how far I have gone in my career. After seeing the many happy faces take a seat in my chair and return for more appointments has truly been a blessing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

It has not been easy. There were situations with clients that I had to deal with. But I prevailed like the professional that I am. Never forgetting the guidance that I had inquired whether negative or positive feedback. I knew those ladies who helped me had my best interest at hand. They gave me insight on how to trust myself when making decisions, staying motivated and how to keep persevering. Remembering that my best is all that I can give to my clientele. I learned that my clients are walking  billboards because they represent me and my brand. So, I go the extra mile in pleasing my clients whether it’s an adult or a child. I want the world to know that I’m very passionate about what I do. The love, time and care that I exhibit in my work has lasting effects. For, an entrepreneur must be kind, considerate and most of all a professional. I have graciously met the criteria.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend came to visit me for a week. Of course I had to show her the best time in Texas. She came in on sunday. She came to my apartment about 10:00 a.m. We talked about the agenda for the week. It included my favorite spot in Frisco, The Common Table for brunch. There was a DJ playing live music. The food and mimosa towers were great. My friend and I went to my salon on Monday. I gave her the grand tour and listened to her critique. I passed the test with flying colors. I picked her up on Tuesday and we went to Gloria’s Latin Cuisine for lunch. We had Mexican food and margaritas.  We later went to Cristina’s for happy hour. We went to the Galleria Mall on Wednesday. We ate lunch at Kitchen + Kocktail for some good soul food and a Hennsey Margarita. Thursday evening we spent our time in the city of lewisville at 4thirteen sports bar for some karaoke. On Friday, she left to go home. We had a great time together.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Finally, I would like to give a shout out to the following people for their love, support, and words of encouragement. My immediate  family and friends. LeLe Brown and Tiamekia Spencer for allowing me to be a part of their team while learning their salon. Thanks! To both of you showing me the process of how to run a salon. A special thank you to my present and future clients.
