We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Duncan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk is the possibility of loss, its about stepping out of your comfort zone. I believe that risk is necessary in life if you want to get to a place in life you’ve never been. About a year ago I decided to step out of my comfort zone and start a business! I never considered myself an entrepreneur; I was content with working a standard 9-5 job, making someone else’s dreams come true. Then I started thinking about how short life is and started asking myself, “If I were to leave this earth tomorrow, what kind of legacy would I be leaving behind?” This led me to realize I can’t live my whole life doing something I’m not passionate about, I have to live it for me & the generations after me. Now, I’m not scared of taking risks in my life or career. Yes, loss may occur but its not the end of the world. Until the day that I leave this earth, there is always another chance to get back that loss and gain a major win. Without taking risks I wouldn’t be married to the love of my life and I wouldn’t be on the path to leaving the workforce and controlling my own time. Nobody is perfect, losses are inevitable but every time you get up and try again, you are a step closer to turning that loss to a win.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Minnie & Mary Accessories are handmade using epoxy resin, mica powders, alcohol inks and acrylic paints. We create ash trays, serving trays, bookmarks and trinket jars. We have been in business less than a year so we are super excited to continue growing and studying our craft. Resin is not always easy to work with, it takes patience and great attention to detail. The best way to overcome the challenges of creating with resin is by studying and practicing. There are a lot of videos on YouTube where other creators provide tons of tips and advice, but at the end of the day you have to figure out what works best for your set up and environment (resin is very sensitive to temperature). I want the world to know that Minnie & Mary was created as an expression of creativity. We love to create for others and see the joy customers have when they see the final product. We love creating custom pieces for our customers that challenge us to think outside the box and really use our creativity. We hope to continue to expand the products we offer and help others get into the industry and grow the community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would stop by The Weed Spot, a coffee shop in the bishop arts district. Grab a Blue Dream Tea and OG Kush Latte then head to one of the Biscuit Bar locations for breakfast. I would order The HOSS with a side of the fully loaded tots, yum! Then for lunch we would swing by Lo-Lo’s Chicken & Waffles and get chicken & waffles of course, with a side of blue raspberry kool aid. Lastly, for dinner and drinks we would have to go to Pangea Restaurant & Bar. I would order the crab cakes, stuffed salmon and a froze. Then head home and stop to see the best skyline; Downtown Dallas at night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout is dedicated to my husband! He saw the qualities of a business owner in me before I saw them in myself. With his continuous support, mentorship, love & encouragement I was able to figure out what it was I wanted to do, instead of always doing what society tells us to do. I would also like to dedicate this to all my family and friends who have supported me thus far, all the likes, shares, praises and purchases have not gone unnoticed. Last but not least I’d like to shoutout my bonus mom for gifting me the book Brave, Not Perfect by Reshma Saujani. This book changed my mindset about failure, taking risks and going after your dreams no matter how crazy they may sound. I recommend everyone give it a read.
