We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Calvert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I started Waist Jewels, I wanted to share my passion for fitness, womans health, and physical training with women in central Texas. I would often hear celebrities, athletes and regular folk brag about woman in LA, Atlanta and other metropolitan areas (specfilly their apparencies) and I wanted to hear my cities name on the list. My desire was to provide a great quality product at an affordable price, but most of all I wanted to provide a product that I, myself would be proud to purchase.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I worked for the state of Texas for 7 years before deciding to go into business for myself. I truly enjoyed my time with the state and all the amazing people I meet along the way. I also received training and honors while employed that really helped me become a stronger CEO/leader. When we started home school due to covid it was extremely hard to manage a 12-year-old, 6-year-old and full-time employment. I eventually quit my job and focused on becoming an Entrepeneur. I don’t regret the decions however I will say I actually work more now because I’m 100% more interested in fitness and health vs processing applications.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to
take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, we would visit all the major surrounding cities. We would visit Epic water park in Dallas, eat at Red Claws Crab Shack and go to a mall there. Dallas definitely is the place for women’s shoes especially heels. We would visit San Antonio maybe catch a concert, river walk, and eat at SA Sea Food. We would visit one of Houston’s urban brunch spots and do some more shopping. Finally, we would end in Austin on the lake or a nice park, maybe hit up the Domain.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first like to give a shout out to God because without his works and faith none of this would be possible.
I would like to shoutout my city Austin Texas! Waist jewel started as an idea and because my city got behind it and quickly, I was able to make major business moves a lot sooner than I would have if they had not supported me.
I feel that as a small business owner and Black Woman it is very hard to encourage people to support your dream for a number of reasons that I won’t get into. Although the original vision showed my city behind me, to actually see people that I may have felt did not like me etc. supporting Waist Jewels really made me feel good and gave me the drive to keep going.
Last but not least I would like to shout out my husband Tremont Calvert for always supporting and pushing me even when I haven’t always been able to push myself.
